Job summary

Paylocity is seeking Software Test Engineers to help ensure our cloud HR and payroll solutions meet customer expectations and quality standards. You will create automated testing plans, coach engineers, and collaborate with product teams.

You will develop automation strategies, contribute to CI/CD pipelines, and perform exploratory and security testing to identify gaps and raise quality. 3+ years of testing experience and API/SQL skills are expected.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience testing software.
• Experience building tests from scratch without an existing framework.
• OOP knowledge, preferably C#.
• Knowledge of client-side web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
• Experience writing SQL queries, including joins.
• Experience testing APIs and consumer-facing web apps.
• Strong knowledge of agile testing practices and CI/CD basics.
• Familiarity with Salesforce Sales/Service Clouds.

Responsibilities

• Create automated testing plans and strategies for products.
• Coach engineers and junior testers in automation and testing practices.
• Collaborate with developers, product owners and analysts on thorough test plans.
• Perform manual, automated, and exploratory testing to uncover issues.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and improve testing efficiency.

Position Overview

Software Test Engineers work with dedicated product teams to ensure our products meet customer expectations. They serve as quality ambassadors, instilling a testing mindset within the team, creating automated testing plans and strategies, coaching engineers and junior test engineers, and solving complex issues. Engineers collaborate closely with software developers to improve overall software quality and recommend opportunities for improvement.

During the First Six Months, You Will

• Recommend and implement improvements to team core processes
• Perform routine testing work independently
• Create medium‑complexity test plans and oversee testing tasks from design to completion
• Solve technical testing challenges with input from senior team members
• Ask questions of developers to ensure a complete understanding of feature designs
• Identify testing gaps and find ways to address them
• Ensure test plans are reusable for regression testing
• Create automation strategies and add automated tests to the existing framework
• Collaborate with developers, product owners, and product analysts to build thorough testing plans and automation strategies
• Perform exploratory testing on the product to uncover challenges
• Coach software engineers and associate test engineers in creating various forms of automated testing (medium to high complexity)
• Execute manual and automated security tests to identify gaps in security coverage
• Monitor quality state, raising awareness and resolving gaps
• Drive the team toward implementing and maintaining continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines
• Actively share knowledge through communities of practice and other contributions

Education and Experience

• 3+ years of experience testing software
• Experience building tests from scratch without an existing framework
• Working knowledge of an object‑oriented language (preferably C#)
• Working knowledge of client‑side web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
• Experience writing SQL queries, including joins
• Experience testing APIs
• Experience testing consumer‑facing web applications
• Deep knowledge of software testing best practices in an agile environment
• Experience with Salesforce.com Sales and Service Clouds
• Knowledge of continuous integration and continuous delivery fundamentals
• Adaptable to change and eager to learn
• Strong curiosity and problem‑solving skills
• Commitment to responsibilities and effective teamwork in an agile setting

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods, typically 7–8 hours a day
• Proficiency in using a computer, phone systems, and typing; ability to operate multiple software programs simultaneously
