Plans computerized databases, including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines, and protection. Ensures accuracy and completeness of data in master files and support tools, such as base dictionaries. Establishes and maintains security and integrity controls. Formulates and monitors policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management. Proposes and implements enhancements to improve system performance and reliability. Note: May be internal or external, client-focused, working in conjunction with Professional Services and outsourcing functions. May include company-wide, web-enabled solutions.

What you'll be doing

The primary responsibility of the Database Administrator is to ensure the performance, integrity, and security of databases and processes. Individuals in this role contribute to the design of data organization and front-end accessibility for end-users.

Database Administrators work closely with Change Control, Release Management, Asset and Configuration Management, and Capacity and Availability Management to establish user needs, monitor access and security, and control database environment permissions.

Key roles and responsibilities:

• Assist in refining the logical design of the database for translation into a specific data model.
• Assist with mapping out the conceptual design for planned databases.
• Contribute to database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and data dictionary definitions.
• Create, test, and execute data management languages.
• Monitor database performance and manage parameters to ensure speedy query responses.
• Respond to database issues by bringing down or taking databases offline as needed.
• Support development of database utilities and automated reporting.
• Set up data sharing and disk partitioning.
• Enable front-end user access tailored to needs.
• Collaborate with Change Control and Release Management to install and customize applications.
• Apply patches and upgrades as required.
• Communicate regularly with technical and operational teams to ensure database integrity and security.
• Maintain data standards per business needs, policies, and legislation.
• Perform installation, configuration, and maintenance within a database administration plan.

Knowledge, skills, and attributes

• Knowledge of data encryption, database querying, and management tools.
• Ability to manage multiple projects with high attention to detail.

Academic qualifications and certifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
• Relevant certifications such as MCSE DBA, Oracle Associate, or equivalent.
• ITIL certification required.

Experience required:

• Proven experience as a Database Administrator.
• Experience with database backup, recovery, and health assessment reports.
• Experience working with suppliers and managing databases in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments.
