Qualifications

  • B.Sc Nursing with Maharashtra Nursing Council registration.
  • GNM with adequate experience.
  • 5–7 years of clinical experience including a minimum of 2 years as shift in-charge.
  • BLS certified.

Responsibilities

  • Take charge of the nursing unit for the assigned shift and ensure adequate staffing and safe patient allocation.
  • Conduct shift handover rounds and verify census, acuity, and bed status.
  • Allocate patients to staff based on acuity and nurse–patient ratio.
  • Lead emergency codes and ensure crash cart readiness.

Job Summary

Team Leader is the shift in?charge of the ward, accountable for safe staffing, patient allocation, supervision of nursing care and smooth functioning of the unit during the assigned shift.

Job Profile

A. Standard Responsibilities – Common to the Designation across Nursing Department

1. Take charge of the nursing unit for the assigned shift and ensure adequate staffing, appropriate skill mix and safe patient allocation.

2. Conduct shift handover rounds and verify census, patient acuity, critical patients, pending tasks and bed status.

3. Allocate patients to nursing staff based on acuity, individual competency and the prescribed nurse–patient ratio.

4. Supervise nursing care delivery, medication administration practices and documentation quality throughout the shift.

5. Ensure implementation of hospital policies, nursing SOPs, international patient safety goals and infection?control practices.

6. Coordinate with duty doctors, consultants and support services – pharmacy, CSSD, laboratory, radiology, dietetics, housekeeping, maintenance and billing.

7. Manage admissions, transfers, discharges, DAMA, deaths and medico?legal cases occurring during the shift.

8. Lead emergency codes in the unit and ensure crash cart, emergency drugs and equipment readiness at all times.

9. Report incidents, complaints, staff absenteeism and equipment breakdown to the Nurse Manager and initiate immediate corrective action.

10. Verify shift reports, registers, indents and inventory records before endorsing to the next shift.

11. Guide, supervise and provide performance feedback on Staff Nurses and Healthcare Assistants deployed in the shift.

B. Ward?Specific Responsibilities

1. Manage ward bed allocation and occupancy, coordinate with front office for admissions and expedite discharge turnaround time.

2. Accompany consultant rounds in the ward and ensure special instructions are captured, communicated and executed.

3. Verify pre?operative readiness and post?operative care of ward patients and coordinate OT shifting schedules.

4. Monitor ward patient safety during the shift – falls, pressure ulcers, restraints, patient identification and medication safety.

5. Ensure completeness of ward IP files, consents, medico?legal entries and the admission–discharge register.

6. Assess ward patients requiring upgradation to ICU / HDU and coordinate shifting with the duty doctor.

7. Address ward patient and relative grievances during the shift and elevate unresolved issues to the Nurse Manager.

8. Supervise ward housekeeping, linen, diet distribution and upkeep of the pantry and utility area.

Skills

1. Communication Skills: Ability to conduct shift handover and briefing, communicate with consultants and support departments, document verbal and telephonic orders, and handle patient grievances.

2. Technical Skills: Competent to supervise all ward nursing procedures, verify documentation and consents, manage medico?legal and death procedures, and lead Code Blue and other hospital emergency codes.

3. Other Skills: Leadership, delegation and shift planning ability, decision making under pressure, working knowledge of HIS and MS Office, and ability to manage support services coordination.

4. Emotional Maturity: Ability to manage team conflicts, handle aggressive or distressed relatives and maintain composure while taking shift level decisions.

Qualification

B.Sc Nursing from a recognised institution with valid Maharashtra Nursing Council registration. GNM with adequate experience may be considered.

Experience

5–7 years of clinical experience including a minimum of 2 years as shift in?charge in in?patient areas. BLS certified.
