Role Overview

The Student Counsellor will play a pivotal role in supporting the personal, academic, and emotional well-being of the student community at Presidency College. With a student strength of over 5000+, the Counsellor will provide professional counselling services, interventions, and guidance that promote mental health, resilience, and academic success while fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and group counselling to students on a wide range of issues including personal and emotional challenges, stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse/drug-related concerns, homesickness and adjustment issues, as well as attendance, academic performance, and motivation.
  • Develop and implement counselling programs, workshops, and awareness sessions on mental health, stress management, and life skills.
  • Establish a confidential, approachable, and student-friendly counselling system within the campus.
  • Maintain accurate records of counselling sessions, interventions, and follow-ups, ensuring strict confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, HODs, and the Placement, Training & Alumni Relations Department to support student success.
  • Identify high-risk cases and refer students to external professional help, psychiatrists, or rehabilitation centers when required.
  • Build rapport with students and act as a trusted mentor, guiding them towards holistic growth and well-being.
  • Prepare reports and updates for leadership regarding student issues, trends, and proactive interventions.
Qualifications & Experience (Must-Have)
  • Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology / Clinical Psychology / Social Work with specialization in Counselling or related field.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of professional experience in student counselling in a college/university or large educational setup.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent and young adult psychology.
  • Proven experience in handling diverse student issues including personal, academic, social, and substance-related concerns.
  • Familiarity with counselling ethics, confidentiality norms, and professional boundaries.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English; knowledge of Kannada/Hindi/Tamil as an additional advantage.
  • Ability to handle large student volumes (5000+) with structured approaches and group counselling initiatives.
Preferred / Desirable Attributes
  • Certifications in areas such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Life Skills Training, Career Counselling, or Addiction Counselling.
  • Experience in organizing and conducting workshops, seminars, and training programs for students and faculty.
  • Exposure to working with multicultural and diverse student populations.
  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.
  • Empathy, patience, and ability to build trust with students.
  • Good IT and documentation skills to maintain records and reports digitally.
