Role Overview
The BESS O&M Engineer is responsible for the continuous monitoring, performance optimization, and maintenance of Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems. You will ensure the facility operates at peak efficiency while adhering to strict safety protocols and grid compliance requirements. This role sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, data analytics, and hands‑on technical troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
Performance Monitoring & Analysis
- Real‑time Supervision: Monitor BESS health via SCADA and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
- State of Health (SoH) Tracking: Analyze battery degradation trends and State of Charge (SoC) accuracy to ensure long‑term asset viability.
- Efficiency Metrics: Track Round Trip Efficiency (RTE) and identify sources of auxiliary power loss.
Preventative & Corrective Maintenance
- Inverter/PCS Care: Perform thermal imaging and torque checks on Power Conversion Systems (PCS).
- HVAC & Cooling: Maintain thermal management systems (liquid cooling or HVAC) essential for preventing thermal runaway.
- Firmware Updates: Coordinate and execute firmware/software patches for the Battery Management System (BMS) and site controllers.
Safety & Compliance
- Thermal Safety: Oversee fire suppression systems (e.g., Stat‑X, Novec 1230) and gas detection sensors.
- Grid Compliance: Ensure the plant meets NERC/FERC standards and local Interconnection Agreements.
- LOTO Procedures: Lead Lock‑Out/Tag‑Out (LOTO) protocols for high‑voltage (HV) switching operations.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
- Experience: 3+ years in BESS, Solar PV, or Wind O&M.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of Lithium‑ion chemistry (LFP/NMC), Inverters, and Transformers.
- Certifications: NFPA 70E (Arc Flash Safety), OSHA 10/30, or Medium/High Voltage switching certification.
- Software: Proficiency in SCADA, Python (for data analysis), and CMMS (e.g., SAP, Maximo).
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to work in outdoor environments and withstand various weather conditions.
Willingness to participate in an "on‑call" rotation for emergency responses.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb ladders/platforms.
