Why Matel Motion and Energy
At Matel, we design and manufacture next-generation electric powertrain technologies that directly drive the EV transition. Powering electric vehicles requires building a scalable, resilient, and highly localized supply chain from scratch. In this role, you won't just manage vendor relationships-you will architect the entire sourcing ecosystem, control program BOM costs, and directly influence our engineering and scaling trajectory. If you want high-visibility ownership over complex automotive component sourcing at a critical growth phase, this seat is for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Sourcing: Define and execute end-to-end sourcing strategies for key powertrain components, including electric motors, gearboxes, e-axles, magnets, castings, and high-voltage connectors/harnesses.
- Supplier Development: Lead identification, technical evaluation, and onboarding of Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers, balancing cost, quality, capacity, and technological readiness.
- Cost Management: Drive robust should-cost modeling, detailed BOM cost breakdowns, and aggressive commercial negotiations to hit program target costs.
- Risk & Capacity Management: Establish multi-sourcing strategies and risk mitigation frameworks for critical, long-lead, or volatile components (e.g., rare-earth magnets, semiconductors).
- Commercial Leadership: Manage RFQ processes, vendor selection, multi-year contract negotiations, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Early Supplier Involvement (ESI): Partner with R&D and Engineering teams during New Product Introduction (NPI) to drive Design-for-Cost (DFC) and Design-for-Manufacturability (DFM).
- Quality & Delivery Oversight: Drive supplier operational performance in tandem with Quality and Manufacturing teams, maintaining adherence to PPAP and IATF 16949 standards.
- Market Intelligence: Track raw material and commodity dynamics (copper, aluminum, steel, rare-earth materials) to proactively protect program margins and timelines.
- Team Leadership: Build, mentor, and scale a high-performing procurement and sourcing team aligned with company localization and expansion goals.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Production). An MBA in Supply Chain Management or Operations is strongly preferred.
- Experience: 12-18 years of progressive experience in automotive or EV procurement, with deep domain expertise in motor, e-drive, and powertrain component sourcing.
- Technical & Commercial Acumen: Proven track record in should-cost modeling, multi-year enterprise contract negotiations, and strategic cost-reduction programs.
- Category Expertise: Hands-on experience managing supply chains for precision gears, castings, forged parts, and specialized automotive hardware.
- Process Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of automotive quality frameworks (IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP) and structured NPI sourcing workflows.
- Execution & Leadership: Demonstrated ability to operate strategically while maintaining hands-on execution, cross-functional influence, and strong team leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience setting up a greenfield EV powertrain sourcing and localization pipeline from scratch.
- Background or direct exposure to child-part procurement and commercial dynamics in the automotive powertrain sector.
- Expertise in rare-earth magnet supply chains and strategic material sourcing.
- An established global supplier network across automotive power electronics and precision manufacturing.
What We Offer
- Direct Impact: Direct ownership over the supply chain strategy that governs program viability and manufacturing success.
- Strategic Seat: High cross-functional visibility with leadership-level involvement in major product and cost decisions.
- Growth: Opportunity to scale an engineering-first company in the fast-expanding EV powertrain space.
