Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with leadership.

• Strong Java backend development with 17/21.
• Hands-on knowledge of Kafka, Spring Boot, Quarkus, AWS, and SQL/NoSQL databases.
• Understanding of scalable backend architectures, cloud platforms, distributed systems.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ownership mindset and accountability for outcomes.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes is a plus.
• Legal authorization to work in India from day one; relocation to Pune may be required.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineering Manager (Backend) based in India.

This is a high-impact engineering leadership role focused on scaling backend platforms and delivering cross-cutting technical solutions. You will shape technical direction across multiple teams while ensuring complex platform initiatives are delivered effectively. The role combines hands-on technical understanding with people leadership, stakeholder management, and strategic decision-making. You will build and manage a strong engineering team while fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. The environment is highly collaborative, with opportunities to work across functions and influence platform strategy at scale. You will work with modern backend and cloud technologies, including Java, Kafka, Spring Boot, Quarkus, AWS, and SQL/NoSQL databases. Accountabilities

• Drive the technical direction and architecture for cross-cutting backend products and platform capabilities.

• Define and execute platform strategies in collaboration with engineering teams and stakeholders across the organization.

• Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing team of software engineers, supporting their growth and technical excellence.

• Ensure engineering initiatives are delivered with high quality, on time, and in alignment with business and platform objectives.

• Build strong working relationships with engineering, product, and other organizational partners to align priorities and successfully execute shared initiatives.

• Make sound technical and organizational decisions when navigating complex engineering challenges and competing priorities.

• Promote engineering best practices, effective collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement across the team.

• Contribute to the design and evolution of scalable backend systems using modern cloud and distributed technologies.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience leading engineering teams.

• Proven experience managing and developing engineering teams, ideally within fintech or another complex, highly regulated technology environment.

• Strong problem-solving, technical judgment, and decision-making capabilities.

• Strong experience with Java 17 or 21, with solid knowledge of backend development principles.

• Hands-on knowledge of Kafka, Spring Boot, Quarkus, AWS, and SQL/NoSQL databases.

• Strong understanding of scalable backend architectures, cloud platforms, distributed systems, and modern software engineering practices.

• Experience collaborating across multiple engineering or organizational teams to deliver cross-cutting technical initiatives.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical partners.

• A strong ownership mindset, with the ability to take accountability for outcomes and make decisions with purpose.

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, or similar technologies is a plus.

• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and promote learning, innovation, and continuous improvement.

• Legal authorization to work in India from the first day of employment; visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

• Willingness to work from or relocate to Pune, India, as required by the role.
