Job description

About the Role

At Abnormal AI, we safeguard the world’s largest enterprises against a wide range of email and collaboration application cybersecurity attacks. We craft products that help customers visualize, control, and combat cyber-security threats.

The Multi-Product Platform (MPP) organization enables scalable product development and a consistent customer experience across enterprise-grade products. This is an opportunity to build the data backbone that every Abnormal product relies on. As a Software Engineer on MPP, you will create a standardized data layer that serves as the single source of truth — a governed path for access to data from across every product, from a single record to cross-product aggregates, online or offline, in whatever form is needed. The layer must handle high throughput and low latency while enforcing tenant isolation, authentication, and fine-grained access control, so teams benefit from strong security and reliability by default. You won’t maintain someone else’s system—you’ll define the foundation on which every product is built, with impact that compounds across the company.

If you are energized by 0→1 platform work, cross-team standards, and end-to-end ownership of a system, this role is built for you.

What YouindsYouinds You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and iterate on the APIs and services that comprise the standardized data access layer.
  • Promote adoption of API-gated data sources so product teams expose data once and all consuming surfaces can reuse it, rather than building one-off integrations.
  • Design and implement standard labeling for data ownership and build validation logic to check incoming requests against it.
  • Own the reliability and stability of the components and features you build.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and write technical design documents for your areas of ownership.
  • Participate in regular code and design reviews and in the team-wide on-call rotation.
  • Write code with testability, readability, and robust handling of edge cases and errors in mind.
Teamwork & Collaboration
  • Communicate effectively in an asynchronous manner to provide updates, discuss challenges, and propose solutions.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams as they adopt the shared data layer.
  • Take ownership of projects and drive positive impact when placed on teams and initiatives.
  • Participate in team roadmap discussions.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and professional development within the team.
Must Have Skills
  • Software Engineer with 4+ years of industry experience and strong software engineering fundamentals.
  • Growth-oriented mindset with increasing impact, responsibility, and ownership over time.
  • Ability to own complex problems and multi-component features end-to-end, with capability to collaborate across teams.
  • Strong experience writing production code in Python and/or Go, and working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with system design and building reliable, scalable applications with emphasis on operational excellence.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to code quality, testing, and performance.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs and select approaches that balance customer impact, complexity, and maintainability.
  • Ability to write technical design documents and contribute to design and architecture reviews.
  • Understanding of service health, monitoring, fault tolerance, and incident response practices.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work autonomously and asynchronously with remote collaborators.
  • Willingness to share knowledge and establish team-level patterns and best practices.
Nice to Have Skills
  • Experience designing or building data access layers, APIs, or platforms used by other engineering teams.
  • Experience treating an internal platform as a product—building for other engineering teams as customers.
  • Familiarity with GenAI productivity tools and related technologies.
  • Experience with Big Data platforms is a plus.
