Job summary

Practo is seeking a backend engineer to design, build, and operate production-grade systems powering healthcare delivery at scale in Bengaluru. You will own reliability, performance, and security across complex workflows.

You will contribute to REST APIs, asynchronous processing, and robust data handling with PostgreSQL/MySQL. Collaboration with product, QA, and business teams is essential for practical, maintainable solutions.

Qualifications

• 2-6 years of backend engineering experience building and operating production applications.
• Strong hands-on proficiency in at least one backend programming language.
• Deep grasp of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and CS fundamentals.
• Solid knowledge of modular architecture, API contracts, service boundaries, scalability patterns, and failure handling.
• Practical experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Ability to break down complex requirements and develop practical, maintainable solutions.
• Clear communication and proven ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

About the role:

• Build and operate production-grade backend systems that power healthcare delivery at scale
• Own the quality, reliability, and operational performance of features from conception through production
• Work with interconnected workflows and mature codebases while adapting to evolving requirements
• Collaborate across engineering, product, quality, and business teams to translate user problems into robust solutions

What you'll work on:

• Design and maintain secure REST APIs and service interfaces that handle complex workflows
• Implement asynchronous processing, background job systems, caching, messaging, and service-to-service communication patterns
• Build and optimize relational database systems, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, and transaction management
• Develop solutions that handle concurrency, race conditions, idempotency, retries, and failure recovery
• Write comprehensive unit and integration tests following sound engineering practices
• Monitor production systems, debug issues, and resolve them through logging, observability, and operational discipline
• Incorporate authentication, authorization, data privacy, auditability, and secure handling of sensitive information into every system

What we're looking for:

• 2 - 6 years of backend engineering experience building and operating production applications

• Experience with multi-tenant SaaS architectures
• Knowledge of healthcare integrations or interoperability standards
• Hands-on work with Docker, Kubernetes, or similar containerization and orchestration
• Experience with AWS or another cloud platform
• Exposure to Redis, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, or comparable technologies
• Track record of improving or modernizing large, mature backend systems
