Job summary

Heartstream is seeking an experienced Software Architect in Bengaluru to lead embedded software design for medical devices. You will drive SDLC processes, architecture decisions, and cross-functional collaboration with global teams to deliver robust software for AEDs, monitors, and related systems.

The role requires expertise in embedded C/C++, RTOS, Linux/Yocto, and microcontroller platforms (STM, NXP) with strong emphasis on design reviews, testing, and regulatory interfaces like DICOM/HL7.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 12+ years of experience in software design and development for embedded software/firmware.
  • Strong grasp of Design Patterns, Multithreading, and Code Reviews.
  • Experience in Agile SW Development; SAFe preferred.
  • Ensure software quality with design reviews and FMEAs.
  • Lead requirements definition, design creation and documentation.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and interfaces is preferred.
  • Design, code and test for embedded systems using C/C++, winCE, Linux, Yocto.
  • Must have RTOS and BareMetal based embedded software experience.
  • Microcontroller development on STM, NXP families (SW/HW domain).
  • Experience in wired/wireless communications (TCP/IP, USB, CAN, etc.).
  • Hands-on SPI, I2C, PWM, ADC/DAC, PCIe, eMMC, USB, UARTs; memory management & threading.
  • Device drivers modification and development.
  • Experience with GitHub, SVN, and Azure DevOps.
  • Educational degree as specified above from an accredited university.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop software solutions, platforms or references (Connectivity, etc.).
  • Determine system, subsystem and interfaces; define requirements.
  • Validate technology choices, evaluate options and set functional/non-functional requirements.
  • Test and review code; participate in code reviews and maintain quality.
  • Collaborate with global team members and stakeholders.
  • Guide the scrum team on design knowledge and best practices.
  • Contribute to code development activities to uphold standards.
  • Apply comprehensive software design principles to solve problems.
  • Understand healthcare standards (DICOM/HL7) to ensure integration and compliance.
  • Engage with Senior Software Architects and Product Owners for lifecycle communication.
  • Focus on integration and functionality within the larger system.
  • Plan Program Increments (~3 months horizon) with scheduling and resources.
  • Own architecture and feature-level requirements within the project context.
  • Maintain up-to-date architecture documentation per regulatory and process standards.
  • Align development with I2M architecture and PDLM/AD interfaces.

Your Impact

We are looking for a passionate Software Architect to join us as we strengthen our product portfolio, expand our services and solutions, and bring game-changing technology to market. This team member will be responsible for working collaboratively with a team of cross-functional engineers.

  • Design and develop software technological solution, platform or reference (Connectivity etc.).
  • Participates in determining the system, subsystem, and interfaces between them.
  • Validates technology assumptions, evaluates alternatives, and defines functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Test and review codes.
  • Work together with global team members.
  • Collaborate with the scrum team to finalize the design of user stories, ensuring they align with the overall architecture and development goals, and take part in code reviews and maintaining code quality.
  • Provides continuous guidance and coaching to the scrum team on design knowledge and best practices and might participate in code development activities to uphold high standards of software quality.
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of software development and design principles, which enables effective problem-solving and innovative solutions within the development team.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of healthcare standards and protocols such as DICOM and HL7, relevant to the business domain, enhancing the integration and compliance of the software solutions.
  • Engages with team-level stakeholders, including Senior Software Architects and the Product Owners, to ensure clear communication and effective collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Focuses on the integration and functionality of components within the larger system architecture, ensuring that each part contributes effectively to the overall system performance.
  • Plans Program Increments (PI) with a typical time horizon of three months, which involves detailed scheduling, resource allocation, and strategic progress towards achieving development targets.
  • Holds responsibility for architecture and requirements at the feature level, ensuring they meet the desired outcomes, quality standards, and stakeholder expectations within the broader project context.
  • Ensures comprehensive, up-to-date, and usable documentation of the software architecture in compliance with regulatory standards and organizational processes.
  • Understands and effectively applies the development logic of the I2M architecture and platform creation process, ensuring seamless interfacing with Application Development (AD) and Product Data Lifecycle Management (PDLM) suites.
You’ll thrive in the role if
  • You’ve acquired Minimum 12+ years’ experience in Software Design and development in embedded software/firmware.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading SDLCs. Good grasp of Design Patterns/ Multithreading, Code Reviews
  • Experience in Agile SW Development practices; experience in scaled agile framework (SAFe) is preferred
  • Assuring software complies to the requested quality norms, leading design and code reviews, and driving FMEAs
  • Leading requirements definition and design creation, detailing, and documentation
  • Knowledge and application of the regulatory standards and interfaces is preferred
  • Experience in Design, Code and Testing for embedded systems using C/C++, winCE, Linux, Yocto
  • Experience with RTOS and BareMetal (MUST) based Embedded Software.
  • Microprocessor/Microcontroller development – Strong Knowledge and working experience on STM, NXP etc. microcontrollers (domain knowledge for designs SW, HW)
  • Experience in wired communication (e.g. USB, GPIB, Ethernet, Serial, RS-485, CAN) and wireless communications technologies like TCP/IP, UDP, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, BLE, NFC, LTE Modem etc.
  • Hands-on experience on SPI, I2C, PWM, ADC, DAC, PCIe, I2C, eMMC, USB, UARTs as well as Memory Management, Scheduling, Interrupts and multi-threading.
  • Peripherals such as PCIe, memory interfaces, OS primitives, memory management, scheduling, interrupts, threading
  • Device drivers - modification and development
  • Experience in version control tools like GitHub , SVN etc.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps tool for backlog and sprint planning.
  • You have BE/B. Tech or ME/M. Tech in Embedded/Electronics/Computer Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university.
