Job summary

AngloGold Ashanti is seeking a senior Geotechnical role to provide specialist engineering support for underground operations and projects across the African Business Unit. This position acts as a tactical advisor on rock mechanics, hydrology, and hydrogeology, embedding within site teams through routine deployments to enhance technical capability.

The role requires 8+ years of modern mechanised mining experience, GCMP/TARP experience, and willingness to travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree Geology, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
• Post-graduate qualification highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Execute tactical open pit designs and reviews.
• Enforce data systems for collection, management (GeotAgg), and validation (PowerBI).
• Support technical audits and reviews; help sites resolve data collection or model deviations.
• Provide secondment to sites to drive workforce development and technical transfer.
• Deliver data inputs to short- and mid-term plans for ground control and asset optimization.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

Provides specialist geotechnical engineering support and services for underground operations and projects across the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) African Business Unit. This role acts as a tactical advisor on rock mechanics, hydrology, and hydrogeology, managing geotechnical risk and embedding within site teams through routine deployments to optimize local technical capability.

ROLEACCOUNTABILITIES

• Geotechnical Design & Systems: Execute tactical open pit designs and reviews. Enforce Group data systems for collection, management (GeotAgg), and validation (PowerBi).
• Operational Assurance: Support technical compliance audits and reviews. Assist sites in creating actionable roadmaps to resolve data collection or structural model deviations.
• Site Deployment & Secondment: Act in seconded site roles for extended periods to directly drive workforce development, technical capability transfer, and operational compliance.
• Risk & Business Planning: Deliver functional data inputs to short- and medium-term plans to ensure ground control efficacy and regional asset optimization.
• Training & Coaching: Provide functional training to site personnel on data management systems, GMRi, and GRiP implementation.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree Geology, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (post-graduate qualification is highly desirable).

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

• At least 8 years modern mechanised operational (onsite) mining experience (ie jumbo development/ longhole open stoping, QAQC, risk management and data collection)
• Has written/ developed Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP) and Trigger Action Response Procedures (TARP)
• Has developed and verified ground support designs for underground development
• Exposure to paste backfill and Life of Mine (LOM) sequencing is desirable
• Willingness to travel extensively
