Job summary

Horizontal Digital is seeking a Senior Shopify Developer to build and integrate commerce experiences across client platforms. You will design, develop and release Shopify storefronts and headless experiences, collaborating with front-end and back-end teams and leveraging AI-assisted tooling for velocity.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years of Shopify work, deep knowledge of Liquid, Shopify APIs, and experience integrating with CMS/DXP platforms.

Qualifications

• 5+ years hands-on Shopify development, including Shopify Plus implementations for mid-market/enterprise brands.
• Experience integrating Shopify with CMS/DXP platforms (Sitecore, Contentstack, Optimizely) in headless/composable architectures.
• Strong command of Liquid and Online Store 2.0 themes; Shopify CLI and theme/app development workflows.
• Hands-on experience with Shopify APIs (Storefront API, GraphQL/REST), webhooks and checkout extensibility.
• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript, React/Next.js skills; Hydrogen/Remix preferred.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Shopify Developer in our Commerce Practice, you build and integrate the commerce experiences that sit at the heart of our clients' digital platforms — from solution design and development through QA and release. Your measure of success is simple: raving-fan clients, reliable storefronts and on-time, on-budget delivery.

We're looking for a hands-on engineer who has shipped Shopify and Shopify Plus solutions alongside enterprise CMS and DXP platforms such as Sitecore, Contentstack and Optimizely. You'll work within a blended team of front-end and back-end developers, partner closely with the Technology Lead, project management, strategy and UX/creative, and bring a pragmatic, AI-assisted approach to how we design, build and deliver.

What You'll Do

Commerce Development & Integration

• Build Shopify storefronts: develop and customize Shopify and Shopify Plus stores, including Online Store 2.0 themes, Liquid templates, sections and blocks, metafields/metaobjects and checkout extensibility.

• Deliver headless or non headless commerce: build headless storefronts using the Storefront API with Hydrogen or Next.js, hosted on Oxygen, Vercel or Netlify, with sound rendering and caching strategies (SSG/ISR/SSR). Develop Shopify experience using Liquid as well.

• Integrate Shopify with CMS and DXP platforms: connect Shopify to Sitecore (including SitecoreAI / XM Cloud), Contentstack and Optimizely so that content and commerce work as one experience — product data in content pages, shoppable content, shared component libraries and unified search.

• Build custom apps and extensions: develop Shopify apps, Functions, checkout and customer account UI extensions, and Flow automations using the Admin GraphQL API, webhooks and Shopify CLI.

• Connect the back office: integrate Shopify with ERP, PIM, OMS, CRM, payment, tax, search and marketing platforms through APIs, middleware and event-driven patterns.

• Contribute to solution design: support technical discovery, help define data models (products, variants, markets, pricing, catalogs), and provide input on estimates, technical specifications and risks.

• Build with quality: write clean, tested, well-documented code, participate in code reviews, and ensure solutions meet performance (Core Web Vitals), accessibility (WCAG), SEO and security standards.

• Support QA and release: partner with QA on test plans and UAT, triage and resolve defects, and support deployments, store migrations and production releases.

Team & Collaboration

• Partner across disciplines: work closely with the Technology Lead, Project Manager, UX/creative and client teams to translate business goals and designs into working commerce features.

• Share knowledge: mentor junior developers, contribute to code reviews and help raise the team’s Shopify and integration expertise.

• Champion AI-assisted engineering: use AI development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) responsibly to improve velocity and quality.

Practice & Growth

• Support business development: contribute technical input to commerce proposals, estimates and solution demos as requested.

• Strengthen the practice: contribute to internal standards, accelerators, reusable Shopify components and integration patterns, and stay current on Shopify, headless commerce and AI trends.

What You Bring

• 5+ years of hands-on Shopify development experience, including Shopify Plus implementations for mid-market or enterprise brands.

• Proven experience integrating Shopify with CMS/DXP platforms: at least one of Sitecore, Contentstack or Optimizely, in headless or composable architectures.

• Strong command of Liquid, Online Store 2.0 theme architecture, Shopify CLI and theme/app development workflows.

• Hands-on experience with Shopify APIs (Storefront API, Admin GraphQL and REST), webhooks, Shopify Functions and checkout extensibility.

• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript, React and Next.js skills; Hydrogen/Remix experience strongly preferred.

• Experience with REST/GraphQL API integration, middleware and serverless/edge functions on platforms such as Vercel, Netlify or Oxygen.

• Working knowledge of Git-based workflows, CI/CD and Agile/Scrum delivery, including estimation and sprint planning.

• Solid grounding in accessibility, SEO, web performance and security best practices for commerce sites.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Bonus Points For

• Practical use of AI-based development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code or similar) and familiarity with Shopify’s AI capabilities (e.g., Shopify Magic / Sidekick).

• Experience with the broader composable stack: Sitecore Search, Contentstack Personalize, Optimizely Experimentation/Personalization, Algolia or similar search and personalization tools.

• Replatforming experience migrating stores to Shopify from Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Adobe Commerce (Magento), Optimizely Commerce or similar.

• Experience with Shopify Markets, B2B on Shopify and multi-store / international setups.

• Shopify Partner certifications and/or Sitecore, Contentstack, Optimizely or Vercel certifications.
