Job summary

ABB is seeking an experienced HV Project Engineer to lead engineering activities for high‑voltage electrical systems in industrial projects from 66 kV to 400 kV. You will prepare key diagrams, layouts, and specifications while coordinating extensively with civil, structural, and SCADA teams in a fast‑paced delivery environment.

The role requires 10–15 years of HV project experience, on-site execution exposure, and familiarity with IEC 61850 and protection schemes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
• 10–15 years of relevant Project Engineering experience.
• Experience as Project Engineer on 4–6 large HV projects.
• Onshore/Offshore substation experience preferred; 1–2 years on-site execution preferred.
• Pre-Bid Engineering and Bid/Proposal exposure is advantageous.
• Proficiency with design tools for relay sizing, earthing, lighting calculations.
• Basic knowledge of power system studies and network modelling.
• Knowledge of communication architecture IEC 61850 and relay selections (ABB/Hitachi/GE/SEL).
• Awareness of IEEE/IEC/ANSI standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering activities for HV systems from 66kV to 400kV.
• Prepare SLDs, protection diagrams, equipment layouts and section drawings.
• Perform sizing, earthing, cable sizing, and lighting calculations.
• Create equipment datasheets, specifications and bid evaluations.
• Coordinate with substation automation/SCADA, civil, structural, supply chain, and project teams.
• Develop engineering schedules and support FAT activities.
• Travel to customer and vendor sites to support engineering and commissioning.

This Position reports to: Engineering Manager

Your role and responsibilities

The primary focus of this role will be to act as the technical lead for all engineering activities in assignments classified as HV system engineering complexity (66kV to 400kV). Ensures that the activities related to all engineering disciplines within the project are executed in an efficient and cost-effective manner, in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, and cybersecurity policies and standards.

The work model for the role is

This role is contributing to Process Automation business for Operation Centers and Quality division based in Bangalore / Chennai, India.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic and detail engineering activities and provide optimized solutions for High Voltage electrical system in industrial projects specifically Offshore wind farm, Onshore Power from Shore and Battery energy storage system (BESS).
• Preparation Key SLD, Protection single line diagram, equipment arrangement plan and section.
• Design calculations for equipment sizing, earthing calculation, cable sizing, cable tray sizing, lighting calculation, lightning calculation
• Layout engineering for equipment arrangement, cabling, earthing, lighting and lightning protections.
• Prepare equipment datasheet, specifications, technical bid evaluation, manufacturer documents review and approval for all equipment used in below HV system:
  • Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) from 66kV and up to 400 kV
  • Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) from 66kV and up to 400 kV
  • Power Transformers
  • Shunt Reactors
  • Associated control, metering & protection panels in scope
• Prepare equipment BOM, cable schedule, Interconnection diagram and termination schedule for complete HV system
• Coordinate with substation automation system / SCADA system for interface engineering activities, Coordination with civil, structural, supply chain, commercial, project management, and manufacturing, testing and site execution teams. Estimate effort for engineering, testing and commissioning
• Prepare Engineering Schedule in line with agreed document deliverable list, matching engineering portion of project schedule.
• Travelling to customer and vendor locations to support engineering, manufacturing and FAT activities.

Qualifications for the role

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
• Minimum 10 to 15 years of relevant experience for Project Engineering
• Worked as Project Engineer in at least 4 to 6 large size projects in HV system.
• Onshore/Offshore -substation experience will be preferred. Minimum 1 to 2 years experince on site execution is preferred.
• Pre-Bid Engineering, Bid & Proposal exposure is an added advantage.
• Proficiency in using design tools like relay selections, equipment sizing, earthing, lighting calculation tools etc.,
• Basic Knowledge of power system study and network modelling preferred
• Basic knowledge on communication archtecture, IEC 61850, relay selections (ABB/Hitachi/GE/SEL) is preferred.
• Understanding the various International Standard/ statutory requirements like IEEE/IEC/ANSI
