Job description

The Assistant Manager – Purchasing will be responsible for planning, sourcing, and procurement of flat steel products, including Hot Rolled (HR) Coils and coated coils (GI/GL/PPGI, etc.), from domestic as well as international suppliers. The role focuses on ensuring cost‑effective, quality‑compliant, and timely supply in line with production and business requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Procurement & Sourcing

• Procure HR coils and coated steel coils as per approved specifications and consumption plans.
• Execute procurement from domestic integrated steel mills, secondary producers, and international suppliers/traders.
• Prepare purchase orders, contracts, and sourcing schedules in coordination with production and planning teams.

2. Domestic & International Purchasing

• Coordinate domestic purchases including price negotiation, delivery schedules, and credit terms.
• Assist in import procurement, including supplier coordination, order placement, shipment tracking, and documentation.
• Support import activities involving Incoterms, LC/advance payments, and port deliveries through internal teams and agents.

3. Quality & Technical Compliance

• Ensure materials meet required IS / ASTM / EN standards, chemical and mechanical specifications, and surface quality norms.
• Coordinate with QA/QC, suppliers, and inspection agencies for tests, inspections, and mill test certificates (MTCs).
• Address quality deviations, rejections, and claims with suppliers.
• Track flat steel price trends, coating spreads, freight, and forex movements.
• Support cost optimization initiatives through supplier comparison and sourcing mix analysis.
• Maintain basic demand‑supply data for HR and coated steel markets.
• Maintain regular interaction with mills, processors, and traders.
• Assist in vendor evaluation based on quality, delivery, service, and commercial performance.
• Develop alternate sourcing options to reduce supply risk.

6. Logistics & Documentation

• Coordinate dispatch schedules, shipment follow‑ups, and delivery confirmations.
• Ensure accurate documentation including POs, invoices, test certificates, shipping documents, and GRNs.
• Support reconciliation of quantities, weights, and commercial terms with finance and stores teams.

7. MIS & Internal Coordination

• Prepare procurement MIS reports on prices, volumes, deliveries, and supplier performance.
• Coordinate with production, PPC, finance, QA, and stores for smooth material flow.
• Ensure compliance with company procurement policies and audit requirements.

Qualifications

Education

• BE / B.Tech in Mechanical / Metallurgical / Production Engineering
• or
• Graduate with MBA / PGDM in Materials Management / Supply Chain / Operations (Preferred)

Experience

• 5–8 years of experience in flat steel procurement
• Hands‑on exposure to HR coils and coated coils
• Experience in import sourcing is preferred
• Good understanding of flat steel products and specifications
• Knowledge of domestic and international steel markets
• Commercial negotiation and supplier coordination skills
• Familiarity with import procedures and documentation
• Strong analytical, communication, and coordination skills
• Proficiency in MS Excel and ERP systems (SAP preferred)
