Job summary

ExxonMobil is seeking a Senior Loss Control Advisor in Bengaluru, India. This role provides expert leadership on hydrocarbon measurement, cargo inspection, and loss control across global marine movements, interfacing with Trading, Sales, Operations, Claims, Legal, and third parties.

The ideal candidate will have 15+ years in petroleum measurement, cargo surveying, and loss control, with strong contract interpretation skills and the ability to influence across senior teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Petroleum Technology, Chemistry, Marine Operations, or a relevant technical discipline.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in petroleum measurement, marine cargo inspection, cargo surveying, hydrocarbon testing, loss control, or quality & quantity assurance.
  • Experience stewarding inspection companies, cargo surveyors, laboratories, and third-party advisors to ensure reliable measurement outcomes.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority across senior commercial, operations, claims, legal, technical, and third-party stakeholder groups.
  • Willingness to be based in Bengaluru, India.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior subject matter expert for marine hydrocarbon measurement, cargo inspection, and loss control across global waterborne movements.
  • Provide expert technical and commercial advice to Trading, Sales, Operations, Scheduling, Claims, Legal, and other teams on measurement risks, inspection strategy, cargo loss exposure, and dispute resolution.
  • Interpret measurement related provisions in contracts, operating agreements, and joint venture arrangements.
  • Ensure contracts and practices align with Corporate Measurement Standards and industry standards.
  • Define, implement, and steward measurement processes for marine movements including custody transfer, sampling, testing, reconciliation, and documentation.
  • Lead or advise on resolution of significant cargo losses, variances, sampling disputes, and inspection performance issues.
  • Support Claims teams on hydrocarbon loss claims, including volume reconciliation and settlement strategy.
  • Lead or participate in external industry groups on measurement standards and best practices.
  • Oversee audits of assets, terminals, laboratories, and inspection providers.
  • Provide guidance on cargo sampling practices, lab testing, and dispute resolution related to product quality.

The Senior Loss Control Advisor is a senior technical and commercial assurance role responsible for providing expert leadership on hydrocarbon measurement, inspection, and loss control/cargo reconciliation across the company’s global marine movements. The role serves as a recognized subject matter expert for crude oil, refined products, NGLs, chemicals, lubricants, and LNG cargoes and will work across ExxonMobil business lines to deliver results. This role has accountability for protecting commercial value, interfacing with terminal operators to reduce measurement uncertainty, resolving complex commercial disputes, and strengthening global measurement governance.

This position requires deep industry expertise in marine cargo inspection, terminal & vessel measurement practices, loss control, laboratory testing, and commercial claim resolution. Additionally successful candidates will have demonstrated the ability to lead inspection execution, define & implement measurement processes, steward 3P service providers, influence commercial outcomes, and interface across both internal and external stakeholders.

The position is based at ExxonMobil’s office in Bengaluru, India.

What you will do
  • Serve as a senior subject matter expert for marine hydrocarbon measurement, cargo inspection, and loss control across global waterborne movements.
  • Provide expert technical and commercial advice to Trading, Sales, Operations, Scheduling, Claims, Legal, and other business teams on measurement risks, inspection strategy, cargo loss exposure, and dispute resolution.
  • Interpret measurement related provisions in commercial contracts, operating agreements, and joint venture arrangements.
  • Ensure contracts and operational practices align with ExxonMobil corporate requirements, including the Corporate Measurement Standard, System of Management Control, and applicable industry standards.
  • Define, implement, and steward robust measurement processes for marine movements, including custody transfer, shore and vessel measurement, sampling, testing, reconciliation, and documentation requirements.
  • Act as the senior technical interface with marine terminals, vessels, inspection companies, laboratories, and third-party oil loss advisors on complex or high-value measurement issues.
  • Provide technical leadership in the resolution of significant cargo quantity or quality discrepancies, including crude oil, refined products, NGLs, chemicals, and specialty hydrocarbon products.
  • Support and advise Claims teams on hydrocarbon loss claims, including volume reconciliation, quality impacts, measurement uncertainty, causation analysis, claim valuation support, and settlement strategy.
  • Lead or support investigations into material cargo losses, unexplained variances, sampling disputes, laboratory discrepancies, and inspection performance failures.
  • Steward the performance of inspection companies, cargo surveyors, laboratories, and third-party technical advisors through performance reviews, issue escalation, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain inspection and measurement guidance for regional operations teams, ensuring consistent global application of company expectations and industry best practices.
  • Provide senior-level coaching and technical guidance to internal teams on marine measurement principles, cargo inspection practices, contract interpretation, and loss prevention.
  • Identify systemic measurement risks and lead improvement initiatives to reduce unknown losses, improve reconciliation accuracy, and strengthen commercial transparency.
  • Support global and regional oil loss performance stewardship, including analysis of loss trends, recurring root causes, inspection gaps, and opportunities for prevention.
  • Participate in or lead external industry working groups related to hydrocarbon measurement, marine cargo inspection, sampling, testing, and loss control standards.
  • Support measurement audits of company-operated assets, marine terminals, third-party facilities, laboratories, and inspection service providers.
  • Advise on cargo sampling practices, sample integrity, laboratory testing protocols, analytical methods, and dispute resolution related to product quality.
  • Support troubleshooting of complex measurement systems, laboratory analytical equipment, shore tanks, meters, proving systems, vessel measurement practices, and custody-transfer processes.
  • Provide technical input during new customer, supplier, terminal, or market-entry engagements where measurement, inspection, or loss-control risks may impact commercial value.
  • Influence senior internal and external stakeholders without direct authority, using technical credibility, commercial judgment, and practical industry experience.
About You

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Petroleum Technology, Chemistry, Marine Operations, or a relevant or relevant technical disciplines; equivalent senior industry experience may be considered
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in petroleum measurement, marine cargo inspection, cargo surveying, hydrocarbon testing, loss control, or quality & quantity assurance
  • Prior experience in a senior technical, operational, inspection management, or loss-control role within the TIC industry, oil major, integrated oil company, trading organization, marine terminal, refinery, or hydrocarbon logistics environment
  • Demonstrated progression from field-level petroleum inspection, cargo surveying, laboratory, or measurement execution into roles involving technical leadership, process governance, commercial dispute resolution, or service-provider stewardship
  • Strong working knowledge of marine custody transfer, shore & vessel measurement, cargo sampling, laboratory testing, inspection documentation, loss analysis, reconciliation, and dispute resolution
  • Sound understanding of Controls, Corporate Measurement Standards, Data Integrity, and relevant industry standards from ISO, API, GPA & ASTM
  • Experience interpreting and applying measurement-related provisions in commercial contracts, operating agreements, or inspection/terminal procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to support or lead resolution of complex cargo loss claims, outturn variances, analytical disputes, sampling issues, contamination concerns, or inspection performance failures
  • Experience stewarding inspection companies, cargo surveyors, laboratories, marine terminals, or third-party oil loss advisors to ensure reliable, compliant, and commercially transparent measurement outcomes.
  • Sound knowledge of petroleum measurement & testing equipment, including shore tank measurement, vessel measurement, metering systems, proving systems, sampling systems, and complex laboratory analytical equipment.
  • Strong commercial judgment and ability to assess financial risk associated with measurement uncertainty, data integrity gaps, contract interpretation, and hydrocarbon loss exposure.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority across senior commercial, operations, claims, legal, technical, and third-party stakeholder groups
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convert complex technical issues into clear business risk, options, and recommendations
  • Agile decision-making capability, with the ability to apply standards and procedures in a fit-for-purpose manner based on risk, commercial impact, operational reality, and technical defensibility
  • As part of being in a controls-sensitive position, understand key controls in area of responsibility and ensure that these effectively mitigate financial risk
  • Willingness to be based in or relocate to Bengaluru, India
