ExxonMobil in Bengaluru seeks a Marine Commercial Advisor to support the Marine Claims team. Responsible for analyzing and negotiating thousands of demurrage and oil loss claims for global trading and sales activities aboard bulk liquid and gas tankers.

The role offers opportunities to develop negotiation, contract structures, and insights into commercial trade flows, working with traders, schedulers, and marine coordinators globally.

Qualifications

• University degree in disciplines related to commercial marine shipping, business and finance, or logistics.
• Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
• Ability to negotiate assertively with third parties to deliver value.
• Knowledge of charter party agreements, laytime calculations, and shipping documentation.
• Attention to accuracy and detail; strong analytical ability.

Responsibilities

• Lead efforts to settle and resolve marine claims; drive value for the company.
• Review and analyze demurrage claims submitted by counterparties or internal teams.
• Negotiate claim settlements with shipowners, charterers, terminals, and other stakeholders.
• Prepare and submit counterclaims or dispute unjustified charges; resolve contractual disputes.
• Reconcile and negotiate complex off-hire and underperformance claims for company-chartered vessels.
• Maintain detailed records of claims, correspondence, and outcomes; communicate progress to leadership.
• Collaborate with legal, operations, trading, and finance teams to ensure alignment on resolution.
• Monitor trends in demurrage exposure and provide pre- and post-deal commercial insights.
• Support audits and internal reviews related to claims handling.

What role you will play in our team

We are seeking motivated and energetic candidates to join our talented team as a Marine Commercial Advisor in support of our Marine Claims organization. ExxonMobil’s Global Marine Claims division is accountable for analyzing and negotiating over 20,000 marine demurrage (delay) and oil loss claims annually associated with ExxonMobil’s global trading and sales and purchase activities transported on bulk liquid and gas tankers.

The role provides extensive opportunities to hone and develop personal negotiation skills, commercial acumen, commercial contract structures as well as opportunities to learn about commercial trade flows and the business of marine shipping. Marine Commercial Advisors will work closely with ExxonMobil traders, schedulers and marine coordinators while also interfacing with external counterparts around the globe.

Job location is based out of Bangalore, Karnataka

What you will do

• Lead efforts to settle and resolve marine claims that may be more challenging or feature complex terms while driving value for the company.
• Review and analyze demurrage claims submitted by counterparties or internal teams
• Negotiate claim settlements with shipowners, charterers, terminals, and other stakeholders
• Prepare and submit counterclaims or dispute unjustified charges; help to resolve contractual disputes with counterparties
• Reconcile and negotiate complex off-hire and underperformance claims for company-chartered vessels
• Maintain detailed records of claims, correspondence, and outcomes and communicate progress to leadership
• Collaborate with legal, operations, trading, and finance teams to ensure alignment on claim resolution
• Monitor trends in demurrage exposure and provide pre- and post-deal commercial insights for improvements to agreements and practices
• Support audits and internal reviews related to claims handling

Your skills & qualifications

• Qualifications: Candidates should hold a university degree in disciplines associated with commercial marine shipping, business and finance, or logistics and have relevant commercial experience; background in shipping post-fixture work is especially beneficial. Candidates should also have the following:
• Solid comprehension, analytical, evaluation and interpretation skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills in English
• Ability to assertively negotiate with third parties and business line contacts to deliver value
• Strong understanding of charter party agreements, laytime calculations, and shipping documentation
• Strong analytical knowledge, attention to accuracy and detail
• Knowledge of marine terminology, operations, and the shipping business
• Team oriented with good interpersonal skills
• Proactive and can manage a large workload while meeting deadlines
• Ability to meet priorities and deadlines
• Attention to accuracy and detail
• Certification in project management (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2)
• Experience with offshore/onshore LNG terminal interfaces and LNG shipboard operations
• Familiarity with international maritime regulations and best practices
