Role Description
Lead the design, development, and qualification of satellite hardware systems, ensuring compliance with performance, reliability, and space environment requirements. Oversee integration, testing, and validation activities while collaborating with cross-functional teams across subsystems. Drive end-to-end hardware lifecycle from concept through deployment and in-orbit support.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Lead the design and development of satellite hardware systems, including avionics, payload electronics, and subsystem interfaces
- Define hardware architecture, specifications, and design requirements aligned with mission and system-level needs
- Perform detailed circuit design, analysis, and schematic development for analog, digital, and mixed-signal systems
- Select and qualify electronic components for space applications, considering radiation, thermal, and reliability constraints
- Develop PCB layouts and oversee fabrication, assembly, and inspection processes
- Conduct design reviews (BDR, PDR, CDR) and ensure compliance with space standards (ECSS/NASA/ISRO guidelines)
- Define and manage hardware budgets (power, mass, thermal, and reliability)
- Lead integration of hardware subsystems with spacecraft systems and payloads
- Plan and execute comprehensive testing and validation activities, including functional, environmental, and qualification testing
- Develop test plans, procedures, and automated test setups for hardware verification
- Perform environmental testing (thermal vacuum, vibration, shock, EMI/EMC) and analyze results
- Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
- Ensure EMI/EMC compliance and signal integrity across all hardware designs
- Collaborate with AOCS, RF, software, and systems teams for seamless subsystem integration
- Support flight software integration and hardware-software interface validation
- Manage vendors and support procurement, inspection, and qualification of hardware components
- Maintain comprehensive technical documentation including design reports, test reports, and compliance records
- Support launch campaign activities, including final integration, testing, and readiness reviews
- Contribute to in-orbit commissioning, anomaly resolution, and performance optimization
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within the team
- Lead development of real-time embedded firmware for systems using C/C++ (ARM, STM32, ESP32, PIC, etc.).
- Interfacing with sensors (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, RS485), GPS modules, IMU fusion and telemetry protocols.
- Develop and optimize firmware for control loops, sensor fusion, flight logic and safety-critical routines.
- Design robust power architectures including: Battery systems, BMS, smart power switching, Power redundancy, isolation, filtering, High-current distribution for propulsion systems
- Develop and integrate datalinks (S-band/C-band/LTE/Mesh radios) and encrypted communication modules
Desirable Skills & Certifications
- Strong expertise in analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design for space applications
- Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD, or equivalent
- Deep understanding of component selection and derating for space environment (radiation, thermal, vacuum)
- Experience with signal integrity, power integrity, and high-speed design considerations
- Strong knowledge of EMI/EMC design practices and compliance requirements
- Hands-on experience with environmental testing (thermal vacuum, vibration, shock, EMI/EMC)
- Proficiency in hardware validation, debugging, and root cause analysis
- Familiarity with hardware-software integration and embedded systems interfaces
- Experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, power analyzers)
- Knowledge of space-grade components, reliability analysis, and failure modes (FMEA/FMECA)
- Understanding of space standards such as ECSS, NASA, or ISRO guidelines
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes, PCB fabrication, and assembly standards
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Python for data analysis, testing, and automation
- Strong documentation, reporting, and technical presentation skills
- Ability to lead design reviews and mentor junior engineers
- Effective collaboration in cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams
- Training or certification in PCB design tools such as Altium Designer Certification or Cadence Certification
- Training in reliability engineering, FMEA/FMECA, and quality standards
- Programming or data analysis certifications (Python/MATLAB)
