1. Position Summary
The Senior Engineer – Tactical Purchasing – is responsible for tactical supplier management and continuity of supply for the casting and machining commodity and selected critical suppliers. The role manages material planning, supplier schedules, capacity risks, inventory, quality follow-up, imports, duty-benefit schemes, systems, and reporting. The position requires leadership behaviors, including ownership, sound judgement, clear communication, effective coordination, and the ability to guide others, with potential to take on broader leadership responsibilities in the future.
2. Key Responsibilities
Casting, Machining, and Critical Supplier Ownership
- Own day-to-day tactical purchasing activities for assigned foundries, machine shops, and selected critical suppliers.
- Monitor supplier schedules, acknowledgements, dispatches, capacity, delivery performance, priorities, and recovery plans.
- Maintain regular supplier communication and escalate significant supply, capacity, quality, or logistics risks.
Material Availability and SIOP Support
- Execute purchase and material plans based on ERP/MRP requirements, production priorities, and approved inventory parameters.
- Participate in weekly and monthly SIOP reviews by providing accurate supplier capacity, delivery, shortage, and material-status information.
- Lead follow-up on critical shortages and past-due supplies to protect production continuity and avoid premium freight.
Inventory and Production Coordination
- Coordinate daily with Planning and Operations to align material availability with production priorities.
- Monitor shortages, excess stock, safety stock, obsolescence risks, and agreed inventory actions for assigned parts.
- Identify planning-system gaps and drive timely correction with relevant teams.
Supplier Quality and Recovery Actions
- Coordinate with Supplier Quality and Engineering on rejections, containment, corrective actions, rework, and recurring quality issues.
- Follow up supplier recovery plans and ensure timely closure of agreed actions.
- Maintain required records and support debit or credit documentation prepared by the responsible functions.
Imports and Duty-Benefit Schemes
- Manage import activities, including shipment follow-up, document coordination, customs-clearance inputs, and logistics exceptions.
- Coordinate Advance Authorization, EPCG, and other applicable duty-benefit schemes with Finance, Logistics, customs house agents, and suppliers.
- Monitor license details, import and export documentation, export obligations, compliance requirements, and timely scheme closure.
ERP, Purchase Orders, and Master Data
- Release purchase orders and schedules against approved sources, prices, and terms, and obtain supplier acknowledgements.
- Complete ERP/IFS transactions, arrival registration, ASN follow-up, MDM updates, CR/CO follow-up, and assigned transaction closures.
- Maintain accurate supplier, part, lead-time, planning, and purchasing data for the assigned scope.
Launches, Transfers, and Engineering Changes
- Coordinate tactical purchasing activities for product launches, phase‑outs, transfers, component revisions, and engineering changes.
- Confirm supplier readiness, material availability, capacity, schedules, and implementation status.
- Escalate risks that may affect implementation timing, inventory, or production continuity.
Reporting and Continuous Improvement
- Prepare and maintain reports for shortages, supplier delivery, capacity, inventory, premium freight, imports, compliance, and open actions.
- Use ERP, Excel, Power BI, and supply‑chain tools to identify exceptions and improve operational visibility.
- Support process standardization, reporting automation, digital trackers, cross‑training, and practical continuous improvement.
Leadership and Future Development
- Demonstrate leadership through ownership, disciplined execution, effective coordination, and timely escalation.
- Guide junior team members, share commodities and process knowledge, and support cross‑training and capability development.
- Demonstrate the judgement, communication, and development potential required to assume broader team or functional leadership responsibilities in the future
3. Key Working Relationships
Stakeholder – Purpose of Interaction
Internal: Sr. Tactical Manager, Planning, Operations, Quality, Supplier Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Finance, Logistics, Sourcing, and other Purchasing team members.
External: Assigned foundries, machine shops, critical suppliers, logistics providers, customs house agents, and other service partners.
4. Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Production, Industrial, Automobile, Metallurgy, Supply Chain, or a related discipline. A Diploma in Engineering with strong relevant experience may also be considered.
- 5‑7 years of experience in tactical purchasing, material planning, supplier scheduling, or supply‑chain operations within a manufacturing environment.
- Hands‑on experience with casting and/or machining suppliers is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of MRP, material planning, supplier schedules, capacity follow‑up, shortage management, inventory control, and production support.
- Good knowledge of import processes, shipment documentation, customs‑clearance coordination, and logistics.
- Practical knowledge of duty‑benefit schemes, particularly Advance Authorization and EPCG, including documentation, obligation monitoring, compliance, and closure.
- Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Excel; IFS, Power BI, and inventory‑optimization tool exposure are preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, supplier coordination, prioritization, and follow‑up skills.
- Awareness of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, company procedures, supplier conduct expectations, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Willingness to travel to supplier locations as required.

- Accurate and timely purchase orders, ERP/IFS transactions, master data, reports, and trackers.
- Timely import clearance support and compliant management and closure of duty‑benefit schemes.
- Successful tactical execution of launches, transfers, phase‑outs, and engineering changes.
- Measurable improvement in process discipline, reporting visibility, team backup, and operational reliability.
7. Role Authority and Escalation
- Independently manage assigned suppliers and tactical purchasing activities within approved processes, sources, prices, terms, and authority limits.
- Escalate risks affecting production, customers, inventory, quality, logistics, compliance, or business continuity to the Sr. Tactical Manager.
- Recommend schedule, capacity, inventory, logistics, supplier‑recovery, and process‑improvement actions.
- Refer strategic sourcing, supplier selection, commercial negotiation, contract, and pricing decisions to the responsible manager or function.
- Provide functional guidance to junior team members; the role has no direct people‑management responsibility unless separately assigned.
