Job Summary
The Product Engineer – RFQ (Technical) is responsible for evaluating customer product requirements from a technical feasibility, manufacturability, and production readiness perspective during the RFQ stage. The role ensures that customer designs are optimized for Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS), identifies technical and manufacturing risks, and supports a seamless transition from RFQ through New Product Introduction (NPI) into mass production.
The engineer will work closely with Sales, Program Management, NPI, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, and customers to provide technically sound and cost-effective manufacturing solutions across Automotive, Aerospace, Defense, Medical, and Industrial segments.
Key Responsibilities
Technical RFQ Evaluation
Review and analyze customer technical documentation, including:
- Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Schematics
- Assembly drawings
- Test specifications and requirements
- Customized component/part drawings
- Evaluate product complexity, manufacturing readiness, and technology requirements.
- Identify potential manufacturing risks and recommend design improvements.
- Support accurate technical inputs for RFQ costing and manufacturing strategy.
Process & Manufacturing Feasibility
Assess manufacturing feasibility for:
- Through-Hole Technology (THT)
- Mixed Technology PCB Assemblies
- Box Build and System Integration
- Recommend suitable manufacturing processes, production flow, tooling, fixtures, and special process requirements.
- Perform Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) assessments.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to optimize production efficiency and yield.
Perform detailed BOM analysis for:
- Component lifecycle status (Active, NRND, Obsolete)
- Package compatibility
- Alternate component identification
- Technical form-fit-function validation
- Coordinate with Supply Chain and Component Engineering to mitigate sourcing risks.
NPI Support
- Support smooth transition from RFQ to New Product Introduction (NPI).
- Participate in prototype builds and first article manufacturing activities.
- Validate engineering changes (ECO/ECN) and design revisions.
- Ensure production readiness prior to pilot and mass production.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Sales, Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Design teams.
- Provide technical clarifications to customers during RFQ discussions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to RFQ engineering and manufacturing processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or equivalent.
- 4–8 years of experience in Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) or PCB Assembly environment.
- Experience supporting technical RFQs and NPI activities.
Technical Skills
Strong Knowledge Of
- PCB fabrication and PCB assembly processes
- SMT, THT, Reflow Soldering, and Wave Soldering
- Gerber interpretation and PCB design fundamentals
- Electronic components, packaging technologies, and assembly methods
- IPC Standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-2221, IPC-7711/7721 preferred)
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Manufacturing process capability and quality requirements
Tools & Systems
- CAD tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or equivalent
- Gerber viewers and PCB analysis tools
- PLM and ERP systems
- Microsoft Excel and engineering documentation tools
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of Electronics Manufacturing processes and Lean manufacturing practices.
- Understanding of process engineering and production optimization.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans, and APQP is an added advantage.
- Exposure to IPC certification is desirable.
