Role & responsibilities
Produce and check the piping and mechanical drawings for D&ES power-plant projects, from plot plans and layouts to isometrics, equipment arrangements and vendor-drawing mark-ups. The Senior Draftsman is the cell's drawing checker: drawings leave the cell consistent with the 3D model, the P&IDs and the datasheets, and in the client's drawing format.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Piping layouts: Prepare plot plans, equipment layouts, piping general arrangement drawings and section drawings for power-plant systems from the P&IDs, equipment data and the Piping lead's routing.
- 3D model and isometrics: Model piping, equipment and supports in the 3D system, extract isometrics and material take-offs, and bring the drawings up to date in the same revision as every model change.
- BOQ of materials: Prepare the bill of quantities (BOQ) of materials for piping and mechanical scope from the model and drawings, and keep it in step with each drawing revision.
- Supports and details: Detail pipe supports from the stress engineer's support schedule, and prepare standard details and typicals with their BOQ and supporting calculations.
- Mechanical drawings: Prepare equipment general arrangement and fabrication drawings from approved datasheets, and mark up vendor drawings against the datasheet for the Mechanical lead's review.
- Drawing checks: Check drawings by designers and junior draftsmen against the P&IDs, line list, datasheets, specifications and model before they go to discipline review, and return errors as numbered mark-ups.
- Inter-discipline data: Take nozzle orientation, pipe-rack, tray and foundation information from the other disciplines through the inter-discipline check, and report clashes to the lead instead of resolving them on the drawing.
- Revision and issue: Keep title blocks, drawing numbers, revision history and the drawing register correct; prepare issue sets and transmittals for IFR, IFA and IFC that match the register.
- Client comments: Incorporate client comments into the drawings and record each closure on the comment sheet.
- Status reporting: Report drawing status against the deliverables register every week so planning can measure progress by deliverable.
- CAD standards: Maintain drawing templates, layers, symbols and the component library; coach junior draftsmen on drawing practice.
- As-built: Update drawings to as-built from site mark-ups at project closeout.
Preferred candidate profile
Education: Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Production or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience: 712 years in piping and mechanical drafting or design, with at least five years on conventional power plants (coal-fired, gas-fired or combined cycle) at an EPC contractor or engineering consultancy.
- Power-plant systems: Layout and drawing of power-plant piping systems such as main steam, feedwater, condensate, cooling water, fuel and compressed air; arrangement of the turbine hall, boiler or HRSG area and pipe racks.
- 3D modelling: AVEVA E3D or PDMS, SmartPlant 3D, or AutoCAD Plant 3D, including isometric and material take-off extraction.
- CAD: AutoCAD at production level; SolidWorks or Pro-E for equipment and fabrication drawings.
- Checking and issue: Has checked other people's drawings and kept a drawing register through IFR, IFA and IFC issue on at least one project.
- Required standards: ASME B31.1 Power Piping as it applies to layout, supports and isometric content; ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing and ISO 128 drawing conventions on mechanical drawings.
- Preferred standards and tools: ASME B31.3; ASME BPVC Section VIII and API 610 as they appear on equipment drawings; drawing standards of MENA and North American owners; Navisworks clash review; an electronic document management system such as Aconex.
- International codes and projects: Familiar with international codes and standards, with proven experience working on international projects.
- Sectors: Experience in oil & gas, refining or water & desalination in addition to power is an advantage.
- Language: Fluent written and spoken English; Arabic is an advantage.
Piping and mechanical design or drafting roles at power-plant EPC contractors and engineering consultancies such as BHEL, Thermax, L&T, TCE, Fichtner, Worley, Toyo Engineering or Tecnimont, or equivalent international firms. Experience producing drawings in India for GCC or North American clients is particularly valued.
