Overview
Heartbeat is GE HealthCare's proprietary business system, our standard way of working together to deliver on commitments to people, patients, and customers. The Innovation Management System (IMS) strengthens the processes that power our innovation roadmap. The Senior Director, Software Engineering is the enterprise technical leader for modern software engineering and works to unify engineering, practices, and AI enablement into a consistent, scalable, and compliant approach.
This leader combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with strong influence and credibility, constructively challenging norms and inspiring engineers and leaders to adopt common, modern, high-performing ways of developing SaMD, SiMD, platforms, and shared components. Our mission is to improve lives in the moments that matter and to turn ideas into world-changing realities.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Define and maintain enterprise software engineering patterns and reference approaches.
- Shape consistent engineering approaches for services, data, UI, and platform components that embed security, quality, and compliance, enabling faster starts, reduced variability, and improved interoperability across teams.
- Advance software reliability engineering (SRE) practices.
- Guide adoption of reliability-focused engineering including service-level indicators, incident learning, and modern operational practices to improve availability, reduce field defects, and lower operational burden.
- Translate regulatory expectations into practical team-level engineering methods.
- Ensure engineering teams can apply standards such as IEC 62304, ISO 14971, IEC 82304-1, and AAMI TIR45 in a lightweight, iterative way, improving audit readiness while maintaining development velocity.
- Lead the software engineering standardization roadmap and develop a multi-quarter roadmap of engineering capabilities, tools, and skills to ensure predictable adoption and compounding improvement across segments.
- Bridge AI R&D and Quality & Development Acceleration technical execution by aligning AI-enabled engineering tools with DevSecOps, validation, and QMS expectations to accelerate safe AI adoption that improves engineering throughput and reduces non-value-add effort.
- Establish enterprise engineering performance measures by defining and deploying metrics for flow, quality, security, and reliability, enabling visibility from engineering work to business outcomes.
- Modernize development environments and CI/CD systems, advancing consistent development, build, test, and release workflows with secure dependency management and automated evidence generation to shorten cycle time and reduce integration failures.
- Uplevel engineering talent and technical decision-making by providing coaching, design reviews, and guidance that raise engineering maturity and strengthen leadership across segments.
- Strengthen platform reuse and integration quality by promoting consistent interface patterns, API standards, and shared services to minimize duplication and improve speed and reliability.
- Foster a learning-oriented, improvement-driven engineering culture through constructive challenge, data-driven experimentation, and transparent communication.
