Job summary

Aon is seeking a Sr Data Governance Engineer in Bangalore to design, curate, and operationalize metadata within Aon’s Data Marketplace. You will work with data producers, stewards, and engineers to manage metadata, taxonomy, and the data catalog, enabling automation and integrations with key data platforms and BI tools.

Qualifications

• Min 5–7 years in metadata management, data catalog administration or similar data role.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with modern data platforms.
• Experience with data catalog tools like Alation, Unity Catalog or Collibra.

General description of role:

This role sits at the intersection of business and technology, helping to design, curate, and operationalize metadata within Aon’s Data Marketplace. You will work closely with data producers, stewards, and engineering teams to analyze metadata and taxonomy structures, administer the data catalog, and support automation and integrations with key data platforms and BI tools

Reporting to the Marketplace Director, you will drive specific workstreams and projects, acting as a bridge between business stakeholders and technology teams to ensure Aon’s strategic data assets are well documented (catalog), certified, and easily discoverable.

What the day will look like:

• Work closely with data producers, stewards, and engineers to manage metadata and taxonomy structures
• Administer and enhance the data catalog (e.g., Alation), including onboarding data sources and maintaining metadata
• Configure metadata ingestion, lineage, and governance workflows.
• Automate metadata updates and integrations using SQL, APIs, and Python
• Collaborate with business teams to improve data discoverability and certification

Key Responsibilities:

• Standards, Taxonomy & Quality– Measure and improve compliance with metadata standards; support the categorization and organization of data using agreed taxonomy and business glossary terms to keep assets accurate, complete and consistent.
• Data Catalogue & Administration– Help administer Aon’s data catalogue (Alation or similar), including source onboarding, connector setup, extraction scheduling and ensuring data assets remain searchable and well documented.
• Curation, Lineage & Automation– Curate metadata, query logs and lineage; use SQL, basic Python and catalog APIs to automate updates and integrate with platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks and BI.
• Governance, Access & Sharing– Support data governance, stewardship models and rolebased access controls (RBAC/ABAC, permissions, classifications), while working with data teams and producers to promote standards, provide guidance/training and act as a bridge between business and technology.
• Documentation– Maintain concise, uptodate documentation for metadata and taxonomy structures, processes, standards and catalog usage.

Skills/competencies required:

• Min. 5-7 years in metadata management, data catalog administration, DQ or similar data role
• Strong SQL skills and experience with modern data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks Unity Catalog)
• Experience with data catalog tools (e.g., Alation, Unity Catalog, Collibra)
• Practical exposure to business glossaries, data lineage and data quality practices
• Data catalog administration: source onboarding, connector configuration, extraction scheduling and setup
• Metadata management: ingestion, curation, tagging and lineage capture and reporting (dashboard's)
• Configuration of metadata extraction, querylog ingestion and lineage, roles & permission, workflows
• Customization of catalog UI, metadata models and workflows (fields, layouts, templates, approvals)
• Use of catalog APIs and basic Python for metadata automation and bulk updates
• Exposure to Integration with BI tools and CI/CD pipelines
• Understanding of RBAC/ABAC and data classifications
