Job summary

PayPay India is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and scale our payment system. You will design large-scale systems, work with Java, Kotlin, Scala, and modern infrastructure to deliver a robust payment experience.

You will own core components, ensure production reliability, and contribute to open source. The role requires 6+ years of backend experience, proficiency in distributed systems, and a willingness to learn new languages.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience with Java and other languages such as Scala, Python, or Go.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, plus distributed cache.
• Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms and OOP.
• In-depth understanding of concurrency and distributed computing.
• Experience with RESTful APIs, Pub/Sub systems, and database clients.
• Experience with microservices and designing high-traffic systems.
• Degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science or 5+ years SaaS experience.
• Business of English or Japanese.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience having excellent skills in Java & any other generalized programming language, such as Scala, Python, or Go.
• Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, along with distributed cache.
• Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms and object oriented programming.
• In-depth understanding of concurrency and distributed computing.
• Experience implementing platform components such as RESTful APIs, Pub/Sub Systems, and Database Clients.
• Experience with microservices.
• Experience designing high traffic systems.
• Degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science or 5+ years equivalent experience in SaaS platform development.
• Business of English or Japanese

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in working for system development in finance, payment, or similar industries.
• Language ability in Japanese and English is a plus (We have a professional translator but it is nice to have language skills).
• Experience with AWS services.
• Leverage AI/LLM-based tools in daily workflows (e.g., code development, reviews, testing, debugging, documentation), while ensuring human oversight, judgment, and accountability drive the final product.
