Job summary

Sapient (Publicis Sapient) in Bengaluru seeks an experienced COBOL Developer to design, modify, and test mainframe applications. You will troubleshoot production defects, perform root-cause analysis, and modernize legacy components by integrating web services or cloud/hybrid solutions.

The role requires deep COBOL/Mainframe expertise, knowledge of CICS/IMS, and familiarity with IDZ and Endevor. Collaborative work in Agile or Waterfall environments is expected.

Qualifications

• COBOL on mainframe systems with 35+ years of hands-on experience.
• Deep knowledge of IBM z/OS, TSO/ISPF, and JCL.
• Experience with DB2, VSAM, and SQL.
• Experience with CICS and IMS for online/transaction processing.
• Familiarity with Endevor, IDZ, Expediter, MQ Series, and file exchange protocols.

Responsibilities

ON CONTRACT (Initially 6 months)

A COBOL Developer designs, maintains, and modernizes mission-critical legacy applications running on mainframe systems, heavily used in banking, finance, insurance, and government sectors. [1, 2, 3]

Key Responsibilities

• Development & Support: Write, modify, and test COBOL code for batch and online mainframe applications.
• System Maintenance: Troubleshoot production defects, resolve ABENDs (abnormal endings), and perform root-cause analysis.
• Modernization: Upgrade legacy code, integrate web services, or transition components into modern cloud/hybrid environments.
• Testing & Documentation: Create technical specifications, draft test plans, and support system integration testing.
• Collaboration: Work within Agile or Waterfall frameworks alongside business analysts, LOB (Line of Business) stakeholders, and offshore/onshore teams.

Technical Skills Required

• Core Language: COBOL (typically 35+ years of hands-on experience).
• Mainframe Environment: IBM z/OS, TSO/ISPF, and Job Control Language (JCL).
• Databases: IBM DB2, VSAM, and SQL.
