Job summary

American Express is seeking a backend engineer to build and maintain scalable backend systems powering its platforms in India. You will write clean code in Java, Python, or Go, follow established patterns, and participate in the full software lifecycle from design to deployment.

Collaborate with product managers, designers and other engineers to deliver features, review peers' code, debug production issues, and maintain thorough system documentation.

Qualifications

About the role

• Build and maintain scalable backend systems and services that power American Express platforms
• Write clean, efficient code in your primary programming language while following established design patterns and best practices
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle from design and implementation through testing and deployment
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers and other engineers to deliver features that meet business needs
• Review code submitted by teammates and provide constructive feedback to maintain code quality standards
• Debug production issues and implement fixes to resolve customer-impacting problems

What you'll work on

• Designing and developing APIs and microservices that handle high-volume transaction processing
• Optimizing database queries and application performance to ensure systems run efficiently at scale
• Writing unit tests and integration tests to verify the correctness of your code
• Documenting technical decisions and maintaining clear system architecture documentation

What we're looking for

• Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms and system design
• Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, Python, Go or similar
• Experience working with relational databases and understanding of SQL
• Familiarity with version control systems and collaborative development workflows
• Ability to communicate clearly about technical concepts with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
• Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail and commitment to writing maintainable code
