Overview
Remote Chemistry Researcher (PhD) – 34441
We are looking for PhD-level researchers in Chemistry to test the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs). You’ll create Chemistry problems, analyze model responses, and identify gaps in logic or understanding to measure how well these models handle abstract thinking and structured problem-solving.
Responsibilities
- Create chemistry problems and review how AI solves them, sharing insights on understanding complex reasoning and logical steps.
- Develop reactor and process scenarios for evaluation, such as:
- A coal gasifier operating at high temperature uses a feed of steam and air to produce synthesis gas from pure carbon. Calculate the equilibrium concentration of a specific gas in the output stream at 1000 K.
- Two elementary gas-phase reactions in a plug flow reactor with stoichiometric feed and known operating conditions. Develop a reactor model to estimate the maximum temperature reached, assuming constant external coolant temperature.
- Provide clear, constructive feedback with examples and maintain strong written communication in remote settings.
- Work independently with stable computer and internet access.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or have completed a Ph.D. or Postdoctoral fellowship in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related field.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback with concrete examples.
- Strong written communication, especially in remote settings.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Stable computer and internet access.
Time Commitment & Contract Details
- Commitments Required: at least 4 hours per day and minimum 20 hours per week with 4 hours overlap with PST. Options: 20 hrs/week, 30 hrs/week, or 40 hrs/week.
- Engagement type: Contractor assignment / freelancer (no medical/paid leave).
- Duration: 1 month; expected start date next week.
- Selection Process: Task-based assessment for shortlisted candidates, followed by a contract offer with defined timelines and workload.
Eligibility Note
Note: This position is open only to candidates who have completed or are currently pursuing a Ph.D.; applications that do not meet this criterion will not be considered.
