Job description

1. Position Purpose

The Manufacturing Quality Manager is responsible for leading, managing, and optimizing all quality management systems, Process controls, and Product Inspections within the manufacturing site. The focus is strictly on maximizing plant performance through line-containment execution, rigorous first-off/last-off setup approval protocols, and aggressive internal scrap reduction. This role ensures total compliance with automotive and high-precision mechanical standards (IATF 16949 / ISO 9001) while eliminating structural manufacturing defects native to cold heading, multi-station forging, and CNC precision machining lines.

2. Core Plant Quality Responsibilities
Shop-Floor Quality Assurance & Process Control
  • Enforce strict first-off and last-off validation protocols across multi-station cold forging presses and high-speed CNC machining centers.
  • Implement and audit Layered Process Audits (LPA) to identify non-conformances early on the manufacturing lines.
  • Oversee real-time line containment procedures to immediately isolate and tag defective lots (e.g., surface cracks, shearing flaws, under-fills).
  • Deploy and monitor statistical process control (SPC) charts at critical-to-quality (CTQ) manufacturing dimensions.
Defect Mitigation & Metrology Operations
  • Manage the metallurgical laboratory, ensuring precise validation of raw wire rod grain flow, microstructure, case-hardening depth, and surface hardness.
  • Supervise regular calibration and Gauge R&R (MSA) studies for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), profile projectors, custom thread gauges, and air gauges.
  • Lead structural defect analysis for specific machining anomalies including burrs, tool-wear variations, thread profile deviations, and surface finish (Ra) non-compliance.
Corrective Action & Root Cause Analysis
  • Champion plant-level 8D problem-solving teams to rapidly address customer escapes, internal sorting loops, and supplier delivery non-conformances.
  • Utilize advanced analytical tools (Is/Is-Not matrix, Fishbone diagrams, 5-Why analysis) to systematically isolate failure modes.
  • Validate and enforce the long-term effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) directly on the plant floor.
Audits, Systems & Compliance
  • Act as the primary site representative for external IATF 16949 registration, surveillance, and demanding OEM customer audits.
  • Direct the internal quality audit schedule covering manufacturing processes, overall plant systems, and specific product layouts.
  • Maintain, update, and digitize all local plant quality documentation including control plans, Process FMEAs (PFMEA), and work instructions.
3. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Internal Scrap Rate Reduction (% reduction year-over-year).
  • Customer PPM (Parts Per Million) / Defect Escape Rate.
  • First-Time-Through (FTT) / Right-First-Time capability on machining and forging blocks.
  • 8D Closure Timeframe (target closure within internal/customer specified days).
  • Successful external audit clearance with zero critical non-conformances.
4. Profile Requirements & Qualifications
  • Educational Background: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or Production/Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in manufacturing quality assurance, with a minimum of 3-4 years in a management role focused specifically on heavy cold forging/heading and downstream precision CNC metal machining components (ideally for the automotive tier-1).
  • Technical Competencies: Expert-level understanding of core quality tools: APQP, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, and MSA. Complete command over GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) print reading and interpretation.
  • Certifications (Preferred): IATF 16949 Internal Quality Auditor and VDA exposure
