Job summary

Job description

Job Purpose

The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring end-to-end product and process quality across Incoming Material Inspection, Fabrication, Welding, Assembly and Pre-Dispatch Inspection (PDI). The role will ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Quality Plans, WPS/PQR, welder qualifications, applicable welding standards/codes and company quality procedures. The position will also be responsible for supplier quality, customer complaints, RCA/CAPA, audits, documentation, calibration, continuous improvement and quality performance management.

The Quality Engineer will work closely with Production, Welding/Fabrication, Engineering, Procurement, Suppliers, Projects and Customers to achieve quality targets, reduce rejection/rework and ensure timely delivery of conforming products.

Role & responsibilities

1. Overall Quality Management & In-Process Quality Assurance

• Plan, monitor and control quality activities across Incoming, Fabrication, Welding, Assembly and PDI.
• Ensure achievement of monthly quality targets and departmental quality objectives.
• Monitor internal rejection, rework, repair and defect rates and initiate corrective actions.
• Ensure manufacturing activities are carried out in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, Quality Plans, SOPs and inspection procedures.
• Conduct stage-wise inspection and ensure quality clearance before proceeding to subsequent manufacturing operations.
• Identify process deviations and ensure timely containment and corrective action
• Coordinate with Production and Engineering for resolution of quality issues affecting production and delivery.
• Maintain proper inspection records and product traceability throughout the manufacturing cycle.

2. Welding & Fabrication Quality Management

• Monitor and ensure welding activities are performed in accordance with approved WPS/PQR and applicable codes, standards and project specifications.
• Review welding parameters, joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, root gap, bevel angle and cleanliness before welding.
• Verify compliance with specified preheating, inter pass temperature, heat input and welding parameters, where applicable.
• Monitor weld repair activities and ensure repaired welds are re-inspected as per approved procedures.
• Verify welding machine/equipment condition and calibration status where applicable.
• Ensure compliance with approved welding sequences and fabrication procedures.
• Support preparation, review and implementation of WPS/PQR, welding inspection procedures and weld maps.
• Coordinate with welding supervisors, fabricators and production teams to prevent recurring welding defects, minimize distortion, and ensure continuous workflow.

3. Quality Documentation & QMS

• Prepare, review, and maintain critical quality documents including Quality Control Plans (QCP), Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), final Manufacturing Data Records (MDR), and Data Dossiers.
• Lead problem-solving documentation for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) using standard frameworks (8D, 5-Why, Ishikawa).
• Ensure shop-floor adherence to ISO 9001 Quality Management System standards and support internal/external quality audits.
• Manage equipment calibration schedules, generate dimensional/NDT reports, and formalize PDI (Pre-Dispatch Inspection) clearance certificates.

4. Advanced Welding Knowledge

• Technical understanding of multiple welding processes, including GTAW (TIG) & MIG.
• Working knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methodologies Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Radiographic Testing (RT). ASNT Level II

5. Manufacturing & Fabrication Process Knowledge

• High proficiency in reading and inspecting against complex mechanical blueprints, including thorough knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Strong understanding of heavy fabrication sequences, sheet metal processing, shearing, bending, rolling, and fundamental machining operations.
• Expertise in using and validating precision measuring instruments ( Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges etc).
