Job Title: Publishing Production Lead – Typesetting & Digital Layout

We are seeking an experienced and delivery-focused Publishing Production Lead – Typesetting & Digital Layout to drive high-quality production across academic, STM, school, and trade publishing projects.

This leadership role owns end-to-end typesetting operations, structured workflows, digital layout standards, and production governance while managing internal teams and interfacing with international publishers.

Responsibilities

• Lead the complete typesetting lifecycle: manuscript to print-ready PDF and digital outputs.
• Manage academic, STM, school, and professional titles.
• Oversee complex layouts (multi-column, math-heavy, tables, graphics-intensive content).
• Ensure adherence to publisher style guides and technical specifications.
• Ensure alignment with accessibility standards (WCAG, EPUB3, PDF/UA).
• Drive on-time, high-accuracy delivery across projects.
• Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign (INDD/IDML).
• Strong understanding of structured content workflows.
• Work within XML-first environments (DocBook, JATS, publisher-specific DTDs).
• Experience handling Math (MathType, MathML, LaTeX integrations).
• Knowledge of preflight, packaging, and print-ready PDF standards.
• Ensure EPUB3, accessibility, and digital compliance standards.
• Collaborate with conversion and XML teams for seamless integration.
• Support automation initiatives and QC tool implementation.
• Implement structured QC/QA checkpoints across layout, styling, tagging, and content integrity.
• Review proofs and eliminate formatting inconsistencies.
• Monitor production KPIs: accuracy rate, TAT adherence, and rework ratio.
• Lead root-cause analysis for recurring production issues.
• Lead and mentor a team of typesetters and junior production staff.
• Allocate workloads based on complexity and timelines.
• Conduct internal training and skill development programs.
• Act as escalation authority for complex technical challenges.
• Interface with international publishers.
• Participate in technical discussions related to workflow improvements.
• Provide production feasibility assessments and effort estimation.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in publishing production/typesetting.
• Experience handling academic, STM, or educational titles.
• Exposure to XML workflows and digital publishing standards.
• Knowledge of XML, EPUB, and accessibility compliance is preferred.
• Strong understanding of layout principles, typography, and print specifications.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Experience

• Exposure to European Accessibility Act (EAA) compliance projects.
• Experience in automated typesetting workflows.
• Familiarity with ONIX metadata and digital publishing standards.
• Experience working with UK/US publishers.
