Job summary

Job Summary:

CEEW seeks to hirea resource to expand its work on understanding the interlinkages betweentransport-based emissions and air quality across India's geography, with aspecial focus on the Delhi-NCR region. The chosen candidate will work with themobility team to assess the impact of EV mandates, enhanced Transit supply, lowemission zone planning, super emitters, travel demand management and technologytransition measures and their impact on a city’s air quality, bothqualitatively and quantitatively. The candidate shall engage with state andcentral government agencies, work in tandem with their requirements, developclear policy recommendations and support stakeholder consultations to buildconsensus on regulations to reduce transport sector emissions.

Typically, it willrequire handling large datasets from ANPR, Surveys, Meteorological data, AQsensors based data, Android phone based GPS data, and other hyperspectral/optical datasets, VHR, LiDAR datasets, etc to build deeper, local solutions.

Job Duties and Accountabilities
Research Support
  • Conductand supervise analyses involving a combination of multiple complex data layers,network analysis and detailed visualisation of the outputs, including but notlimited to data cleaning, pre- and post-processing.
  • Tosupport the team in developing questionnaires, survey forms, and otherqualitative and quantitative tools specific to GPS, ANPR and air qualitysensor-related data parameters.
  • Toextrapolate and verify data from sources like AVLs, ANPR cameras, GPSsmartphones and or AQ sensors to analyse, evaluate, organise, and edit the datainto comprehensive yet concise reports and other collateral.
  • Conductan in-depth analysis of historical vehicle penetration across segments, fueltypes, and Bharat Stage (BS) compliance to establish a robust baseline foremissions modelling. This analysis should leverage data from the existing fuel-forecastingmodel (TFFM) to enable quick and efficient assessments.
  • Quantifythe longitudinal impact of evolving emission standards on urban air sheds andGHG trajectories, oversee the deployment of high-precision sensors in the DelhiNCR area and monitor the data readings.
  • Utiliseadvanced Source Apportionment and emission inventory techniques for specificcontribution of various vehicle segments to the total pollution load, Implementrigorous QA/QC protocols and automated calibration workflows to ensure dataintegrity for real-time pollutants, mathematical models to simulate complexexhaust and non-exhaust vehicular emissions.
  • Establisha robust framework for translating raw sensor and GPS data into actionableinsights for policymakers with respect to transit planning, improvingaccessibility to IPT and mass transit, and developing low emission zones.
  • Generate high-resolution spatial heat-maps ofNMT traffic flow at transport nodes, vehicular emissions wrt critical"choke points" in the urban transport infrastructure, road-dust,real-time visualisation platforms (Dashboards) for monitoring.
Collaboration and Liaison
  • Inform and support the development of knowledgeproducts, tools, and research methodologies for public bus transport promotionwithin the team.
  • Assist the team in generating snackable insights bycreating robust, statistically sound models that produce compelling datavisuals for the organisation’s social media platforms.
  • Regularconsultation with officials, industry and other stakeholders to supportevidence-based decision-making.
  • Managethe end-to-end lifecycle of field experiments and sensor maintenance contracts.
  • To engage with relevant stakeholders, representthe organisation and attend conferences and pertinent sessions to sustainablemobility.
Programme Assistance
  • Assist with specific projects and the overall plan ofactivities under public transport, electric vehicle transition, and othersustainable mobility research, bridging the teams' research.
  • Assist in preparing presentations, fact sheets, andother research communication material, other impactful communication pieces todrive opinion and nudge behaviour.
  • To generate knowledge content – blogs, articles, briefsin regular intervals.
  • To develop and coordinate effectively with stakeholderson cross-cutting themes on air pollution, mass transit, EVs, public health, andtechnology transition.
  • To actively find opportunities to present anddisseminate research to key constituencies, advisory bodies, conferences &research institutes.

Shortlisting Criteria
Education and experience
  • Minimum a Master’s degree in data sciences, transportplanning, environmental engineering, environmental science and civil engg orequivalent.
  • PhD in relevant topic isdesirable.
  • Prior experience in emissions assessment, air qualityanalysis, spatial data analysis, large data analysis, data visualisation, andcity-scale traffic and transport data analysis.
  • 3-7 years of relevant experience or research on therelevant topic.
Key skills
  • Experience carrying out data analysis onprogrammes such as Python, R is a prerequisite
  • Must have strong research skills – the abilityto carry out a literature review is a key requisite; familiarity with researchmethods is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Good written and oral communication skills
