We are looking for an experienced Principal ServiceNow Architect to lead the architecture, solution design, technical governance, and implementation of scalable ServiceNow solutions. The individual will be responsible for translating business and IT requirements into secure, maintainable, and upgrade-friendly platform capabilities aligned with ITIL best practices and enterprise architecture standards.
The role requires a strong combination of ServiceNow platform expertise, hands-on technical proficiency, ITSM process knowledge, integration architecture, and stakeholder management. The candidate must be capable of independently handling complex technical challenges, evaluating existing implementations, identifying architectural gaps, and driving solutions from design through deployment and operational support.
The architect will work closely with business stakeholders, ITSM process owners, platform administrators, developers, integration teams, infrastructure teams, security teams, and delivery leadership.
Define the ServiceNow platform architecture, technical standards, design principles, and implementation guidelines.
Translate business requirements and functional specifications into scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.
Lead architecture assessments, solution design reviews, technical feasibility assessments, and architectural decision-making.
Evaluate out-of-the-box capabilities against customization requirements and prioritize configuration over custom development wherever feasible.
Define reusable architectural patterns, application boundaries, data models, and integration approaches.
Maintain architecture documentation, solution design documents, technical specifications, and architecture decision records.
Assess existing implementations to identify technical debt, architectural inconsistencies, performance bottlenecks, and opportunities for simplification.
Design and govern ServiceNow ITSM capabilities, including Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Enablement, Request Management, Knowledge Management, and Service Catalog.
Align platform workflows with ITIL 4 principles and enterprise service management policies.
Review and optimize incident categorization, impact, urgency, priority, assignment rules, escalation, and SLA management.
Define appropriate priority calculation and escalation models, ensuring that business impact and urgency drive consistent prioritization.
Establish standards for incident lifecycle management, major incident handling, problem investigation, change risk assessment, approvals, and service restoration.
Ensure that process implementations are consistent, measurable, auditable, and aligned with operational objectives.
Challenge unnecessary customizations or process variations that increase complexity without delivering measurable business value.
Provide technical leadership for complex ServiceNow implementations, custom applications, workflows, and platform enhancements.
Design and troubleshoot advanced automation, event-driven processing, asynchronous operations, and complex workflow logic.
Define appropriate use of IntegrationHub, Flow Designer, scripting, scheduled jobs, events, and platform-native capabilities.
Review code for quality, security, scalability, performance, maintainability, and compliance with ServiceNow development standards.
Diagnose complex defects, production incidents, transaction failures, slow-running scripts, and unexpected platform behavior.
Establish development standards, code review practices, reusable components, and technical documentation.
Design and govern integrations between ServiceNow and enterprise systems using REST APIs, SOAP APIs, IntegrationHub, and other supported integration mechanisms.
Define authentication, authorization, API security, error handling, retry mechanisms, monitoring, and integration resiliency.
Lead integration design across identity management, monitoring tools, ERP, CRM, HR, cloud platforms, and other enterprise applications.
Establish data ownership, data mapping, transformation, reconciliation, and validation standards.
Govern CMDB data integrations, identification and reconciliation rules, and data quality where applicable.
Troubleshoot integration failures, authentication issues, data inconsistencies, API errors, and performance constraints.
Establish platform governance, development lifecycle standards, application access controls, and technical quality gates.
Ensure appropriate use of roles, ACLs, authentication, authorization, encryption, and sensitive-data controls.
Define instance strategy, application scope, update-set or application deployment practices, and environment promotion controls.
Establish release, upgrade, regression-testing, and rollback strategies in collaboration with platform operations.
Assess customization impact on upgrades and minimize upgrade conflicts.
Monitor platform health, transaction performance, script efficiency, integration reliability, and technical debt.
Ensure compliance with enterprise security policies, audit requirements, and applicable governance standards.
Define CMDB architecture, configuration item classes, relationships, ownership, and data quality controls.
Establish configuration management standards and alignment between business services, technical services, and supporting infrastructure.
Provide architectural guidance for Discovery, Service Mapping, Event Management, and operational visibility where these capabilities are in scope.
Define integration patterns for infrastructure monitoring and service health data.
Ensure that CMDB and operational data support incident impact analysis, change risk assessment, and service availability objectives.
Evaluate and recommend appropriate ServiceNow capabilities across ITSM, ITOM, IT Asset Management, Strategic Portfolio Management, HR Service Delivery, Customer Service Management, Security Operations, and Integrated Risk Management, according to business needs.
Assess product fit, licensing implications, implementation complexity, dependencies, and business value.
Identify opportunities to consolidate fragmented workflows and reduce overlapping tools or custom-built solutions.
Define platform evolution roadmaps, capability maturity improvements, and modernization priorities.
Stay current with relevant ServiceNow releases, platform capabilities, architecture guidance, and recommended practices.
Partner with business stakeholders, process owners, product managers, project managers, and delivery teams to establish solution scope and technical priorities.
Lead architecture workshops, technical design discussions, proof-of-concept exercises, and solution demonstrations.
Provide technical direction and mentoring to developers, administrators, technical leads, and implementation partners.
Review estimates, technical dependencies, delivery risks, and implementation plans.
Support testing strategy, defect triage, deployment readiness, go-live, and post-production stabilization.
Communicate architectural decisions, risks, trade-offs, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
12–15+ years of overall IT experience, with substantial hands-on ServiceNow experience.
Typically 8+ years of ServiceNow implementation and development experience, including significant ownership of complex technical solutions.
Demonstrated experience designing and delivering enterprise-grade ServiceNow architectures.
Strong knowledge of ITSM processes and ITIL principles; ITIL 4 certification is preferred.
ServiceNow Certified System Administrator certification; relevant implementation and architect-level certifications are strongly preferred.
Proven experience with REST/SOAP integrations, authentication, data transformation, and integration troubleshooting.
Experience with platform security, access controls, performance optimization, release management, and upgrades.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, stakeholder management, and technical leadership skills.
Ability to work independently, make architecture decisions, explain technical trade-offs, and take ownership of complex issues.
ServiceNow Certified Application Developer certification.
Relevant ServiceNow CIS certifications, particularly ITSM and ITOM where applicable.
ServiceNow Certified Technical Architect or Certified Master Architect credentials, where held and relevant to the role.
Experience with enterprise architecture frameworks, service management governance, and technical debt reduction.
Experience leading multi-team implementations, platform modernization, and enterprise integration programs.
A clearly defined, documented, and governed ServiceNow architecture.
Consistent implementation of ITSM processes aligned with business policies and ITIL principles.
Improved platform stability, integration reliability, maintainability, and upgrade readiness.
Reduced unnecessary customization, technical debt, recurring defects, and avoidable production incidents.
Stronger code quality, security controls, documentation, and deployment governance.
A prioritized platform improvement roadmap tied to measurable business and operational outcomes.
