Job summary

AECOM in Bengaluru seeks a Principal Engineer - Secondary Substation to lead a Protection & Control team on global energy projects. You will drive HV/EHV substation design, review supplier work, and mentor engineers, delivering high-quality diagrams, relay settings, and SCADA topology.

You will coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams, manage client relations, and contribute to bids and documentation while ensuring compliance with IEEE, IEC, and regional codes.

Qualifications

• Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• 12–15 years of professional work experience.
• CEng or PE license or equivalent globally recognized credential.
• Experience leading large Grid Substation design teams in a global consultancy.
• Experience in HV Plant Design for EHV Substations is mandatory.
• P&C FEED or detailed design experience for 132–400 kV.
• Substation Protection/Control drawings and Relay Coordination experience.
• Experience with GIS/AIS EHV substation designs is preferred.

Job Description

We are seeking a Principal Engineer - Secondary Substation to join our Transmission & Distribution team in India. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated engineer to contribute to impactful Energy projects across the globe and continue developing their technical expertise in a supportive, high-performing team.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Protection & Control engineers and technical specialists.
• Develop, refine and optimise P&C solutions including creation of key line diagrams, schematic diagrams, relay settings, SCADA topology diagrams, wiring diagrams, design specifications, interface drawings and other deliverables for various Transmission & Distribution clients.
• Owners Engineers role, to review and comment on supplier designs and calculations on behalf of HV Clients, including BESS and Renewables projects.
• Conduct Protection Coordination Studies and Settings calculations where required using ETAP or similar software (desired).
• Coordinate across multi-disciplinary engineering environments and project managers.
• Support with technical reports and bids, as well as foster positive relationships with clients.
• Ensure adherence to AECOM and client design management processes while leading project and client meetings as needed.
• Mentor team members in their development, facilitating opportunities that build competency, and assisting with professional accreditation where appropriate.
• Ensure design submissions comply with codes, standards such as IEEE, IEC, National Grid, and quality requirements.
• Drive innovation in AI, digital, scripts automation, develop the user defined dynamic & transient models.
• Performs quality control review of design calculations or drawings.
• Prepares technical specification sections.
• Provides input to the development of engineering budgets and schedules.

Qualifications

• Master of Engineering degree (or equivalent education) in an appropriate engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
• 12-15 years of work experience is preferred.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng), or Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent in the relevant field from any global organization (e.g., Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK).
• Prior experience in leading large design engineering teams performing Grid Substation design in a global consultancy firm is preferred.
• Experience in HV Plant Design for EHV Grid Substations is mandatory.
• Experience in P&C FEED or detailed design of high voltage installations (132kV to 400kV).
• Experience in preparation of Substation Protection and Control Scheme drawings, Relay Coordination and Settings, Panel GA drawings, Substation SCADA and communication protocols, etc is preferred.
• Previous experience in design teams working for Grid Utilities (e.g., Global National Grid, Transgrid, Powergrid etc.) for Substations and Transmission Line Electrical design.
• Exposure to International standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI, Australian Standards, NEC, BS, Middle East region codes & standards, etc.) is preferred.
• Should have led large teams and faced clients independently.
• Previous design experience working with GIS and AIS EHV substation HV Plant Secondary design is preferable.
