Principal Engineer for Camera Signal Processing Automotive
Unit and team Overview
Infotainment platforms unit is responsible for developing, maintaining and deploying BMW infotainment platform.
BMW infotainment platform is Linux (Yocto) based SW platform that provides common automotive functions used by multiple automotive ECUs. The unit is also responsible for cross-cutting concerns of the platform, like architecture, security, stability and performance. The platform is deployed into multiple infotainment domain ECUs, ranging from headunits and rear seat entertainment systems to telematics and audio ECUs.
The Camera Signal Processing team develops and evolves embedded software for in-vehicle camera systems used by driver assistance, safety, and infotainment functions. The team works in a cross-functional automotive environment with internal architecture and function teams, as well as external SoC, sensor, and middleware suppliers.
The team is responsible for camera pre-processing components, image signal processing pipelines, system integration, diagnostics, and long-term quality/performance over the full vehicle lifecycle.
Job Description
Technical lead for automotive camera image signal processing, including video pipelines and signal streams for SerDes-based cameras
End-to-end responsibility for sensor-bound camera software development, from design to integration and optimization
Drive diagnostic error handling in production-grade automotive systems
Collaborate closely with functional owners, system architects, suppliers, middleware teams, and customer-function clients
Ensure implementation compliance with software design and BMW requirements; perform code reviews to maintain high software quality
Define, refine, and validate technical requirements with architecture, functional teams, and suppliers
Mentor engineers and act as domain expert for camera pre-processing topics
Qualifications
Basic requirements and Education
Business fluent English
University degree in computer science, electrical engineering, communications engineering, or a comparable field
Required Experience and Skills
Several years of professional experience in embedded Linux software development in automotive environments
Deep expertise in video pipelines, and good knowledge in camera image processing, image quality tuning, and sensor configuration
Good knowledge of serial camera interfaces and protocols (e.g., GMSL, FPD, ASA-ML, CSI, I²C)
Strong experience with embedded development and analysis tools (e.g., Visual Studio Code, Wireshark, Carmen, Perfetto, FTrace)
Proven capability in software quality assurance, code reviews, and requirement-driven implementation
Excellent communication, coordination, and technical leadership across internal and external stakeholders
