Purpose Of The Role
The Platform Operations Engineer is responsible for maintaining the security, stability and performance of Pico’s internal infrastructure and client trading platforms. The role focuses on supporting mission‑critical trading environments, including the investigation and resolution of operating system, platform and hardware issues that impact client trading services. This customer‑facing role delivers high‑quality operational support to Pico’s trading clients, working closely with clients, internal teams, vendors and exchanges to ensure trading systems remain reliable, secure and performant, meeting agreed service levels and operational expectations.
Responsibilities and duties
- Provide operational support across Pico’s infrastructure and platform services, including client trading environments, to ensure systems run at optimal performance and consistently meet defined KPIs and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Ensure the stability, availability and reliability of platform services in a 24x7 production trading environment.
- Act as second‑line support, performing technical investigation, triage and expert‑level troubleshooting of platform and client systems.
- Take end‑to‑end ownership of incidents and service requests logged in the Pico ticketing system through to resolution.
- Perform root cause analysis of platform incidents and contribute to permanent fixes and preventative improvements.
- Deliver a high standard of operational service and maintain strong relationships with internal teams and external customers.
- Interface with vendors, market participants and financial exchanges to support platform operations and resolve technical issues.
- Remotely coordinate and validate on‑site hardware installations, replacements and repairs.
- Execute preventative maintenance activities, including server operating system patching and firmware upgrades, to maintain platform security and reliability.
- Develop and maintain automation using scripting and configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible) to support platform deployment, configuration and ongoing maintenance.
- Create and maintain platform documentation, including system diagrams, operational runbooks, flowcharts and scheduled operational reports.
- Conduct daily platform health checks, capacity reviews and infrastructure monitoring, reporting any risks or anomalies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of platform operations processes, tooling and reliability.
Education, Skills, and Background
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4–8 years of experience working in a production operational environment supporting critical infrastructure.
- A minimum of 4 years’ hands‑on experience supporting physical and virtual server platforms.
- Experience supporting platforms within the financial services or trading industry is strongly preferred.
- Proven experience administering Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
- Hands‑on experience with systems management tools, including Red Hat Satellite.
- Experience configuring, maintaining and operating server and infrastructure monitoring solutions.
- Strong experience working with bare‑metal server deployments at scale.
- Practical experience with HPE and Dell server hardware and associated management tools.
- Proficient in scripting and automation using Bash, Ansible and Python.
- Solid understanding of server performance and capacity monitoring, including CPU utilisation, memory contention, disk usage and network I/O.
- Strong server‑side networking knowledge, including IP routing, TCP/IP, multicast, DNS, NTP and PTP.
- Excellent communication and customer‑facing skills, with the ability to work directly with clients in a high‑pressure operational environment.
Shift Pattern
Working days: Wednesday to Sunday.
Working hours: 9‑hour shift (including a 1‑hour break) within the 08:00 – 18:00 GMT/BST coverage window. Shift start and end times change with daylight saving when operating in IST.
Working Arrangements
This is a hybrid position, with a weekly in‑office presence and the flexibility to work from home. Travel may be required occasionally but is not expected to be regular or frequent. The role holder will work whatever hours are necessary for the performance of this role, including across multiple jurisdictions and geographies (EMEA, USA and APAC).
