Job summary

Phenom, an Applied AI company, seeks a highly skilled Backend Java Developer (PDE II) to join our Interview Intelligence team. You will build backend systems that capture, process, and analyze interviews at scale, powering AI-driven insights for better hiring decisions.

You will design and maintain scalable services with Java, Spring Boot, and microservices, and develop real-time data pipelines and AI-powered workflows.

Qualifications

• 4–6 years of backend development experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Strong fundamentals in designing distributed, scalable systems and microservices.
• Experience building event-driven architectures with Kafka or similar streams.
• Hands-on in AI/LLM-powered workflows and real-time data pipelines.
• Proficiency with REST APIs, WebSockets, and streaming protocols.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
• Containerization using Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes in cloud environments.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and build tools (Maven/Gradle).
• Experience with observability, metrics, logging, and tracing in production.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in AI-augmented teams.

Responsibilities

About The Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Backend Java Developer (PDE II) to join our Interview Intelligence product engineering team. You'll build the backend systems that capture, process, and analyze interviews at scale — powering AI-driven, real-time insights that help companies hire better. You'll work on high-throughput, event-driven services and real-time AI workflow pipelines, and play a key role in designing and building scalable backend systems, microservices, and APIs across our product ecosystem. This role is ideal for engineers who are strong at system design, excited by agentic and AI-driven workflows, work fluently in an AI-augmented development environment, and thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑growth product environment where they can take ownership, innovate, and solve complex engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java & Spring Boot
• Build event-driven microservices and real-time data/insights pipelines with high performance and reliability
• Design, build, and productionize AI/LLM-powered and agentic workflows — including orchestration, evaluations, and guardrails
• Build APIs using REST, WebSockets, and streaming protocols
• Collaborate with product managers, architects, and front-end developers to define technical solutions
• Write clean, testable, and maintainable code, and apply strong judgment when reviewing and shipping AI-assisted code
• Optimize application performance, security, and scalability
• Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and technical architecture decisions
• Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to root-cause analysis & resolution backed by strong observability practices
• Work in an Agile environment leveraging CI/CD, automated testing, and cloud deployment workflows

Required Skills

• 4–6 years of hands‑on backend development experience
• Strong hands‑on experience in Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices architecture
• Strong system‑design fundamentals and ability to design distributed, scalable systems
• Hands‑on experience building event‑driven systems with Kafka (or similar messaging / event‑streaming platforms)
• Experience building and productionizing AI/ML & LLM‑powered systems — agentic workflows, AI workflow pipelines, and real‑time insights pipelines
• Practical experience with the AI engineering toolkit: RAG and vector databases, context/prompt engineering, and evaluations & guardrails for LLM outputs
• Familiarity with LLM observability and cost/latency/token management in production
• Experience building real‑time / streaming and media‑processing systems
• Ability to work effectively in an AI‑augmented engineering workflow, with strong judgment in reviewing and validating AI‑generated output
• Proficiency with REST APIs, WebSockets/streaming, distributed systems, and multi‑threading concepts
• Experience with SQL & NoSQL databases — PostgreSQL and MongoDB
• Hands‑on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure)
• Strong understanding of Git, CI/CD pipelines, and build tools (Maven/Gradle)
• Experience with unit testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito) and a test‑automation mindset
• Familiarity with observability tooling (metrics, logging, tracing) and production monitoring
• Strong problem‑solving skills

Nice to Have

• Experience with agent orchestration frameworks (LangChain / LangGraph‑style or equivalent in‑house systems)
