Job summary

BMW TechWorks India Private Limited seeks an Operational Lead to own the Codebeamer Platform operations, ensuring stability, availability, and performance. You will lead a cross‑functional team of Linux, database, cloud, and middleware specialists while coordinating incident management and vendor support.

During a cloud transformation, you will manage hybrid on‑prem and cloud workflows, validate architecture, and optimize latency and reliability across both environments.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in IT operations or site reliability engineering with on-prem and cloud.
• Strong Linux admin with RHEL/CentOS and filesystem diagnostics.
• Oracle DB experience; Oracle OCI familiarity; PostgreSQL optional.
• Experience with Tomcat/Payara/Glassfish and Apache HTTP Server.

Codebeamer (PTC) is BMW's enterprise-wide Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) system, used by thousands of users across multiple business units with tailored configurations. The platform is currently hybrid and in an active cloud transformation (application to Azure, Oracle database to OCI).

What awaits you/ Job Profile

We are looking for a strong Operational Lead to own and drive the operations and maintenance of the Codebeamer Platform at BMW. You will be responsible for ensuring platform stability, availability, and performance, leading the operations team, coordinating incident management, and driving continuous improvement of operational processes.

You will operate the platform in a hybrid setup during an active cloud transformation: keeping the current on-premise environment stable while we migrate the application to Azure and the Oracle database to OCI – our intended target architecture – ensuring stability across both worlds throughout the transition.

You will lead a team of specialists (Linux, database, cloud, middleware) rather than doing everything yourself: your strength is breadth, sound judgement, and orchestrating the right expertise across domains. As we validate the target architecture during the migration, you help assess real-world constraints (such as latency) and recommend well-founded refinements.
Support model: 08:00–17:00, Mon-Fri (CET/CEST),
On-Call support after working hours as per requirement

What should you bring along

• Platform Operations – ensure stable, secure, performant operation; monitor health, availability, and performance; define and track SLAs/SLOs.
• Incident & Problem Management – own the process end-to-end; coordinate multi-level support and vendor escalation; drive root cause analysis.
• Support Organization – manage support processes and escalation paths; coordinate with PTC vendor support; track support metrics.
• Monitoring & Alerting – maintain dashboards and alerting; establish capacity and growth monitoring to anticipate limits early.
• Platform Maintenance – patches, updates, configuration changes; coordinate version upgrades; data lifecycle and housekeeping.
• Infrastructure & Middleware – application servers (Tomcat, Payara), web servers (Apache HTTP), database operations, and verified, tested backups for all critical data.
• Linux System Administration – hands-on administration, cron/systemd, log analysis, and filesystem diagnostics (disk, inode, directory-level).
• Security & Access – SSO integration (OIDC, OAuth 2.0, SAML); coordinate with IAM/security; ensure compliance with BMW standards.
• Hybrid & Cloud Operations – run on-premise and cloud (Azure app, OCI database) in parallel; manage hybrid connectivity; validate and refine the target architecture.
• Operations Team Leadership – lead, mentor, and develop the team; define roles and on-call rotations.
• Stakeholder Coordination – align with Product Owners, Agile Master, and Munich; participate in change advisory boards.
• Go-Live Gateway Reviews – assess business-unit releases for operability and supportability; expand acceptance criteria; condition or block go-lives that are not operable.
• Process Improvement & Automation – reduce manual effort through scripting, tooling, and DevOps practices.
• Documentation & Knowledge Management – maintain runbooks and SOPs; ensure knowledge transfer and cross-training.

Must have technical skill

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or a related field.
• 7+ years in IT operations, platform management, or site reliability engineering – with both on-premise and public-cloud operations.
• Strong Linux administration (RHEL/CentOS); proficient with grep, sed, find, awk, cron, systemctl, journalctl; solid filesystem diagnostics (disk space, inodes, directory-level limits).
• Application server experience (Tomcat, Payara/Glassfish) including performance troubleshooting (thread-pool tuning, thread dumps, CPU- vs. memory-bound analysis, job concurrency).
• Web server experience – Apache HTTP Server (load balancing, reverse proxy, URL rewriting).
• Database experience – Oracle preferred (our target, including Oracle@OCI); ability to adapt to alternatives such as PostgreSQL.
• Cloud operations – hands-on running enterprise applications in a public cloud (Azure and OCI are our targets): compute, networking, storage, monitoring, backup.
• Comfortable in a hybrid environment, running on-premise and cloud in parallel during a migration.
• Incident and problem management in multi-level support organizations.
• Monitoring tools – Prometheus, Grafana, Nagios, Zabbix, or similar.
• SSO/IAM integration – OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, SAML.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Team leadership experience – leading 5+ people in an operations context.
• Fluent in English (written and spoken); German is a plus.

Good to have technical skills

• Experience with Codebeamer or similar ALM tools (JIRA, Polarion, Azure DevOps).
• Experience with PTC products and vendor support processes, including driving vendor accountability.
• Knowledge of BMW IT processes and organizational structure.
• Cloud migration experience – lift-and-shift / re-platforming of enterprise applications to Azure / OCI.
• Azure and/or OCI certifications.
• Hybrid and multi-cloud networking – VPN/ExpressRoute, DNS, identity federation, cross-cloud interconnect.
• Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, OCI).
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps).
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, Bicep/ARM, Puppet).
• ITIL certification or experience with ITIL-based service management.
• Log aggregation tools (ELK Stack, Splunk).
• Knowledge of automotive compliance requirements (ISO 27001, TISAX).
• Scripting skills – Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
