Role Summary
The Engineering Document Controller (Naval Architecture) manages and controls all technical documentation associated with ship design, construction, and modification projects. The role ensures that engineering drawings, design reports, calculations, and classification society documents are registered, version-controlled, and distributed in accordance with company procedures and project requirements. The position supports naval architects, marine engineers, and project teams by ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and traceability of all documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the document control system for naval architectural and marine engineering projects.
- Register, track, and control the issuance of all design documents, drawings, and class submissions.
- Coordinate with classification societies (ABS, DNV, LR, BV, etc.) for document submittal and approval.
- Maintain a Master Document Register (MDR) and monitor document status and due dates.
- Support audits and ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and company quality management systems.
- Liaise with naval architects, production engineers, clients, and vendors to resolve document discrepancies.
- Generate document status and performance reports as required.
- Ensure final documentation handover (as-built drawings, certificates, manuals) is completed per project closeout requirements.
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or Information Management.
- Certification in Document Control / Records Management preferred.
- Knowledge of shipbuilding documentation and classification society requirements.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems. Experience minimum 7 years work experience
Skills & Competencies
- Proficient in Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS): Aconex, SharePoint, Smart Plant, Teamcenter, or equivalent.
- Understanding of naval architecture documentation (GA drawings, hydrostatics, structural drawings, piping, machinery layouts).
- Strong knowledge of document numbering, revision control, and filing systems.
- Excellent computer skills (MS Office, AutoCAD viewer, Adobe Acrobat).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to prioritize and work under pressure.

Responsibilities
- Register GA drawings, stability data, weight estimates, and initial class submissions.
- Detailed Design Manage detailed structural and outfitting drawings; ensure class and client comments are incorporated.
- Production / Construction Control workshop drawings, track revisions, and manage “as-built” updates.Commissioning / Trials Control test reports, stability and sea trial documents, and class certificates.
- Handover & Delivery Compile final documentation, manuals, certificates, and as-built packages for client and flag state.
