Mechanical Design Engineer creates, develops, and tests mechanical systems, components, and tools using CAD software. They take products from concept to manufacturing, ensuring functionality, reliability, and safety. Core tasks include 3D modeling, conducting engineering simulations (FEA/CFD), prototyping, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Development: Use CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, UGNX) to create 3D models and detailed engineering drawings.
- Prototyping and Testing: Build prototypes and perform testing to validate designs against performance and safety standards.
- Analysis: Analyze design feasibility, assembly, and maintenance, including performing stress analysis and tolerance stack-ups.
- Documentation: Create and maintain documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs) and technical reports.
- Project Lifecycle: Oversee projects from initial concept through production, managing timelines and budgets.
- Collaboration: Work with manufacturing, procurement, and external suppliers to optimize designs for production.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Software: Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, or Inventor).
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, sheet metal, machining).
- Analytical Skills: Ability to perform engineering calculations and use simulation tools.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills for technical reporting and team collaboration.
