Manager - Global Software Asset Management (SAM)

How you will contribute
Lead the global Software Asset Management strategy and operations to ensure license compliance, optimize software spend across on-prem, SaaS, and cloud, and reduce audit and security risk. Own the SAM operating model, processes, and tooling across regions; partner with Publishers, Legal, Data Privacy, Finance, Security, IT, and business units to deliver a single source of truth for software assets, proactive governance, and measurable savings. Modernize SAM services while maintaining strong audit defense and enterprise publisher management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the global Software Asset Management strategy and operations to ensure license compliance, optimize software spend across on-prem, SaaS, and cloud, and reduce audit and security risk.
- Own the SAM operating model, processes, and tooling across regions; partner with Publishers, Legal, Data Privacy, Finance, Security, IT, and business units to deliver a single source of truth for software assets, proactive governance, and measurable savings.
- Define and execute a global SAM strategy, roadmap, and operating model covering on-prem, SaaS, and cloud (IaaS/PaaS), aligned to enterprise goals and risk appetite.
- Establish and maintain policies, standards, and processes for the full software lifecycle: demand, procurement, deployment, usage, optimization, renewal, and retirement.
- Govern compliance and audit defense: ensure license compliance across publishers; maintain audit-ready evidence; lead audit responses to minimise financial and legal exposure.
- Implement and enforce controls to address license, cyber, privacy, data governance, and financial risks associated with software last use date.
- Govern SaaS portfolios and cloud license models; optimise consumption and ensure entitlement compliance.
- Drive enterprise software cost optimisation through usage analytics, right-sizing subscriptions, harvesting unused entitlements, and contract/rate optimisation; maintain KPIs on spend, utilisation, and savings.
- Own the SAM/ITAM toolset (e.g., ServiceNow SAM Pro), with discovery from Intune, entitlement normalization, reconciliation and reporting capabilities to maintain a single source of truth.
- Partner with Publishers to negotiate pricing and renewals; align contract terms with legal and security requirements.
- Coordinate with Legal, Finance, Security, IT Ops, IT Business Partners; embed SAM checkpoints in procurement, change, and security governance.
- Build and mentor a global SAM team, define roles/KPIs, foster cross‑functional collaboration, and champion the evolution from compliance‑centric SAM to a strategic value driver (“SAM 2.0”).
- Equip the team to remediate and on‑board new titles efficiently.
- Manage tickets and licence provisioning, contract changes, chargebacks, and payment processing.
Qualifications
- 8‑12+ years in Software Asset Management/ITAM with global scope, including leadership of enterprise publisher portfolios and audit defence.
Licensing & Domain Knowledge
- Deep knowledge of licensing metrics for major publishers and SaaS subscription models; familiarity with cloud licensing and virtualization impacts on consumption.
Tools & Analytics
- Proficiency with SAM platforms (ServiceNow SAM Pro, Workspace & Dashboards) and advanced analytics (e.g., Excel Pivot/Power BI) for normalisation, reconciliation and KPI reporting.
- Provide monthly reporting to the business units.
Governance & Process
- Demonstrated ability to establish global SAM policies/standards and operate a cohesive lifecycle process across regions and business units.
Stakeholder & Vendor Leadership
- Manage tickets and licence provisioning.
- Manage contract changes with Legal, Finance, Security and IT; strong negotiation and executive communication skills.
- Manage chargebacks to the business.
- Manage payment processing.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Business, Finance or related field; certifications such as IAITAM CSAM/CITAM or equivalent preferred.
