Job summary

Mashreq, a leading bank, seeks a Manager to drive decarbonisation within the Global ESG & Sustainability team. You will translate net-zero commitments into actionable strategies and manage data-driven analyses of financed and operational emissions.

You will lead cross-functional workstreams, apply PCAF and GHG Protocol standards, and contribute to regulatory disclosures and client decarbonisation initiatives across regional portfolios.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Energy Management, Sustainability, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Master's degree is highly preferred.
  • Experience in environmental management, GHG accounting, or climate risk in financial services preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of GHG Protocol (Scopes 1, 2 & 3) and PCAF.

Job description

The Manager, Decarbonisation Specialist is a critical technical role within the Global ESG & Sustainability team, responsible for supporting the bank's efforts to measure, track, and accelerate the decarbonization of its financed and operational emissions. This individual will bring deep expertise in GHG accounting, climate science, and sector-specific decarbonization pathways to translate the bank's net‑zero commitments into actionable strategies. The role involves rigorous data analysis, methodology application, cross-functional collaboration, and providing specialist advice to business lines to facilitate their transition to a low‑carbon economy.

Key Result Areas
  • Support stakeholders in developing and refining the bank's decarbonization strategies and roadmaps for financed and operational emissions, aligned with global net‑zero commitments.
  • Support the implementation of specific decarbonization initiatives and projects, ensuring alignment with overall climate transition goals.
  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis on sector-specific decarbonization challenges, technologies, and opportunities relevant to the bank's lending and investment portfolios (e.g., energy, transport, heavy industry, real estate).
2. GHG Accounting & Data Management (Financed & Operational Emissions)
  • Engage with the collection, validation, and analysis of GHG emissions data both operational and financed, with a strong focus on financed emissions (Scope 3 Category 15) using frameworks like PCAF (Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials) and other relevant methodologies.
  • Review the data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across all regions and business lines, managing internal data collection processes and supporting external data assurance.
  • Support and maintain internal dashboards, trackers and reporting tools to track decarbonization progress against targets.
  • Support the annual financed‑emissions baseline refresh calculations.
  • Apply and manage science based target setting methodologies for both corporate and financed emissions.
  • Evaluate and recommend new methodologies, tools, and best practices for emissions measurement, target setting, and decarbonization pathways.
  • Provide expert guidance on the interpretation and application of climate accounting standards and frameworks.
4. Client & Business Line Decarbonisation Support
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing technical support and guidance to client-facing teams (e.g., CIBG,IBG,RBG) on decarbonization topics.
  • Assist in identifying and assessing clients' decarbonization plans, transition risks, and opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development of internal training materials and workshops on decarbonization for business units.
5. Regulatory & Disclosure Contribution
  • Monitor and analyze evolving global and regional climate‑related regulations and reporting standards (e.g., EU Taxonomy, CSRD) specifically pertaining to emissions measurement and decarbonization.
6. Cross‑functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate effectively with Risk, One Data, Finance, Operations, Corporate Affairs, and other internal stakeholders to embed decarbonization considerations into processes and systems.
  • Work with technology teams to enhance data infrastructure for emissions tracking and reporting.

  • Analytical Skills: Evaluate climate transition and disclosure frameworks, standards, analyze rating methodologies, identify areas for improvement, and develop action plans to enhance climate transition. Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, conduct rigorous analysis, and develop practical, data‑driven solutions.
  • Process Improvement: Identify inefficiencies in climate‑related workflows and implement streamlined processes to enhance execution and compliance.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Energy Management, Sustainability, Data Science, or a related technical field. A Master's degree is highly preferred.

  • Experience: 5-8 years of progressive experience in environmental management, GHG accounting, climate risk, sustainable finance, or a related technical role, preferably within a financial institution, consulting firm, or a large corporate with a significant climate agenda.
  • Deep and practical expertise in GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (Scope 1, 2, & 3).
  • Extensive experience with PCAF Standard for financed emissions accounting.
  • Proven experience with science based target setting and validation processes.
  • Strong understanding of various sector‑specific decarbonization levers and technologies (e.g., renewable energy, energy efficiency, carbon capture, sustainable fuels).
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., advanced Excel, Python, R, Power BI, Tableau).
  • Financial Acumen: Foundational understanding of banking products, credit processes, and investment strategies.
  • Analytical Skills: Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills with a meticulous attention to detail. Ability to analyze complex datasets, identify trends, and derive actionable insights.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively in a cross‑functional, global team environment.
