Job summary

Synthite in India seeks a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to ensure safe, reliable operation of plant machinery. You will plan and execute PM/PdM programs, diagnose breakdowns, and drive reliability improvements.

You will lead RCA, FMEA, MTBF/MTTR metrics, maintain CMMS records, coordinate with stores for spares, and support plant shutdowns while upholding safety and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 3–6 years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical maintenance.
  • Hands-on experience with rotating equipment, utility systems, and plant machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, schedule, and execute PM and PdM programs for mechanical equipment.
  • Plan maintenance for pumps, compressors, gearboxes, conveyors, boilers, and rotating equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical failures and restore operation with minimal downtime.
  • Lead RCA for critical failures using 5 Why, Fishbone, and related methods.
  • Maintain CMMS records and ensure timely closure of work orders and KPIs.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and coordinate with Stores/Procurement.
  • Support plant shutdowns/turnarounds with planning and execution.
  • Oversee contractors to ensure safety, quality, and timely delivery.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and reliability-focused Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant machinery and utility systems.


The role will be responsible for planning and executing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, troubleshooting mechanical breakdowns, conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and implementing reliability improvement initiatives to maximize equipment availability and minimize production downtime.


The ideal candidate should possess strong hand-on mechanical expertise, sound problem-solving abilities, and a data-driven approach to maintenance and reliability engineering, with a strong commitment to safety, statutory compliance, and operational excellence.


Key Responsibilities

1. Maintenance Strategy & Planning


  • Develop, schedule, and execute comprehensive Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) programs for mechanical equipment.

  • Plan maintenance activities for critical assets including:


    • Pumps

    • Compressors

    • Gearboxes

    • Conveyors

    • Boilers

    • Rotating equipment

    • Utility equipment


  • Monitor equipment condition and identify potential failures before they impact production.

  • Review maintenance schedules and continuously improve maintenance effectiveness and equipment reliability.


2. Breakdown & Corrective Maintenance


  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical equipment failures and restore equipment operation with minimum downtime.

  • Provide hand-on technical support during emergency breakdowns.

  • Supervise and perform equipment alignment, balancing, rigging, installation, and commissioning activities.

  • Ensure proper documentation and closure of breakdown maintenance activities.

  • Identify recurring equipment issues and implement permanent corrective actions.


3. Reliability Engineering & Continuous Improvement


  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for critical and recurring equipment failures using techniques such as:


    • 5 Why Analysis

    • Fishbone / Ishikawa Analysis

    • Fault Tree Analysis


  • Conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify equipment risks and prioritize reliability improvement initiatives.

  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment availability, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).

  • Recommend and implement modifications to improve equipment reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.

  • Analyze maintenance data and failure trends to drive continuous improvement.


4. CMMS & Maintenance Documentation


  • Maintain accurate equipment history, maintenance records, work orders, and maintenance KPIs in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

  • Ensure timely closure and documentation of preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance activities.

  • Monitor key maintenance indicators such as:


    • Equipment availability

    • MTBF

    • MTTR

    • Preventive maintenance compliance

    • Breakdown frequency

    • Maintenance cost



5. Spare Parts & Inventory Management


  • Identify and maintain critical mechanical spare parts and consumables.

  • Forecast spare-part requirements based on equipment criticality, consumption, and failure history.

  • Maintain optimum inventory levels for critical maintenance components.

  • Coordinate with Stores and Procurement teams to ensure timely availability of critical spares.

  • Identify opportunities to optimize maintenance inventory and reduce unnecessary inventory costs.


6. Safety & Statutory Compliance


  • Ensure strict compliance with LOTO (Lockout/Tagout), Permit to Work (PTW), and applicable plant EHS procedures.

  • Ensure maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with approved safety procedures and work practices.

  • Coordinate statutory inspections and certifications for regulated equipment, including:


    • Boilers

    • Pressure vessels

    • Lifting equipment and tackles

    • Other applicable mechanical systems


  • Conduct maintenance activities with a strong focus on safe work practices and environmental compliance.


7. Shutdown & Turnaround Management


  • Support the planning and execution of major plant shutdowns, turnarounds, and overhauls.

  • Develop shutdown maintenance plans, manpower requirements, material requirements, and execution schedules.

  • Monitor shutdown activities to ensure completion within the planned timeline and budget.

  • Conduct post-shutdown reviews and identify opportunities for improvement.


8. Contractor Management


  • Supervise and coordinate third-party maintenance contractors.

  • Ensure contractors comply with approved technical specifications, quality requirements, safety procedures, and work permits.

  • Monitor contractor performance, manpower deployment, work quality, and timely completion of assigned activities.

  • Coordinate with production, EHS, engineering, and other relevant departments for smooth execution of maintenance activities.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.

  • 3–6 years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in a manufacturing or process industry.

  • Hands-on experience in maintenance of rotating equipment, utility systems, and plant machinery.


Required Technical Skills


  • Strong knowledge of mechanical maintenance principles and practices.

  • Experience in Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM).

  • Good understanding of pumps, compressors, gearboxes, conveyors, boilers, and rotating equipment.

  • Knowledge of equipment alignment, balancing, bearings, lubrication, and mechanical seals.

  • Strong troubleshooting and breakdown-handling capabilities.

  • Knowledge of RCA, FMEA, 5 Why, and Fishbone Analysis.

  • Familiarity with CMMS-based maintenance management.

  • Knowledge of maintenance KPIs such as MTBF, MTTR, equipment availability, and PM compliance.

  • Knowledge of LOTO, PTW, and industrial safety practices.

  • Good understanding of statutory requirements related to boilers, pressure vessels, and lifting equipment.

  • Basic proficiency in MS Excel and maintenance reporting tools.

Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience in process industries, chemical manufacturing, food processing, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or other continuous manufacturing environments will be preferred.


Experience in plant shutdown/turnaround management, reliability improvement projects, and CMMS implementation will be an added advantage.
