Job summary

FIS is seeking a Mainframe Software Engineer in Chennai to develop, enhance, and support critical card management and payment processing solutions. You will design, code, test, and maintain mainframe apps ensuring secure and reliable performance.

Responsibilities include implementing changes, performing unit tests, addressing production issues, and collaborating with business, QA, and engineering teams throughout the lifecycle. Prior experience in regulated payment environments is beneficial.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in developing and supporting enterprise mainframe apps.
• Strong COBOL and JCL skills.
• Hands-on with IMS DB/DC, CICS, VSAM, IMS, DB2, MQ Series.
• Experience using File-Aid, InSync, Xpediter, Endevor.
• Knowledge of SDLC practices, testing, and change management.
• Excellent communication and collaboration across teams.

About the Role

As a Mainframe Software Engineer, you will contribute to the development, enhancement, and support of critical card management and payment processing solutions. You will design, develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications that support transaction processing, reconciliation, settlement, compliance, and modernization initiatives. Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, secure, and reliable solutions. You will play a key role in regulatory compliance, product enhancements, production support, and continuous improvement efforts.

What You Will Be Doing

• Develop, enhance, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL and related technologies.
• Translate technical and functional designs into high-quality, scalable, and maintainable code.
• Design and execute comprehensive unit tests to validate application functionality and performance.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues within defined service level expectations.
• Collaborate with business, product, quality assurance, and engineering teams throughout the development lifecycle.
• Conduct peer code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of development standards.
• Participate in technical design discussions, code walkthroughs, and solution reviews.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, test evidence, and change records to support audit and compliance requirements.
• Support modernization, regulatory, security, and compliance initiatives across critical payment systems.
• Optimize application performance, reliability, and operational stability within complex enterprise environments.

Required Qualifications

• Proven experience developing and supporting enterprise mainframe applications.
• Strong proficiency in COBOL and Job Control Language (JCL).
• Hands-on experience with IMS DB/DC, CICS, VSAM, IMS, DB2, and MQ Series.
• Experience using development and debugging tools such as File-Aid, InSync, Xpediter, and Endevor.
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle practices, testing methodologies, and change management processes.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively across teams.
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience delivering solutions in regulated, high-volume transaction processing environments.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and delivery commitments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with HP JCL environments.
• Knowledge of Agile or Scrum delivery methodologies.
• Experience within card payments, debit processing, or financial services domains.
• Exposure to payment processing, transaction management, reconciliation, or settlement systems.
• Familiarity with modernization initiatives, API integration, and legacy system transformation.
• Experience supporting compliance, security remediation, and vulnerability management programs.
