Job summary

SGS India is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to oversee day-to-day laboratory operations in Maharashtra. You will supervise staff, manage resources, ensure quality and safety, and meet testing turnaround time commitments.

The role requires technical oversight, staff development, instrument management, and active involvement in audits and CAPA processes to ensure compliance with ISO 17025 and customer requirements.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. / M.Sc. Chemistry or related discipline.
  • Additional certifications in Quality Management, Laboratory Management, ISO 17025, or Safety Management are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily laboratory testing activities.
  • Ensure timely allocation of samples and work assignments to Chemists and Analysts.
  • Monitor testing progress to meet customer turnaround time commitments.
  • Ensure all testing activities are conducted in accordance with SOPs and relevant standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory personnel.
  • Review test results for accuracy, completeness, and technical validity before submission.
  • Assist in troubleshooting analytical and operational issues.
  • Supervise Chemists, Analysts and support staff; plan daily manpower deployment.
  • Monitor calibration schedules and preventive maintenance; coordinate with service engineers.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 17025 and laboratory quality procedures; support audits and CAPA.
  • Monitor sample receipt, testing status and report issuance; ensure traceability.
  • Raise purchase requisitions and coordinate with procurement for resources.
  • Support customer visits and technical discussions; assist in new projects.

Job description

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for supervising day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring effective manpower utilization, maintaining compliance with quality and safety requirements, and achieving testing turnaround time commitments. The role involves technical oversight of laboratory activities, staff supervision, customer support, resource management, and continuous improvement of laboratory processes.

Key Responsibilities
1. Laboratory Operations Management
  • Supervise and coordinate daily laboratory testing activities.
  • Ensure timely allocation of samples and work assignments to Chemists and Analysts.
  • Monitor testing progress and ensure achievement of customer turnaround time (TAT) commitments.
  • Ensure all testing activities are conducted in accordance with approved SOPs and relevant standards.
2. Technical Supervision
  • Review testing procedures and ensure compliance with ASTM, IS, IP, ISO, and customer-specific methods.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory personnel.
  • Review test results for accuracy, completeness, and technical validity before submission.
  • Assist in troubleshooting analytical and operational issues.
3. Manpower Management
  • Supervise Chemists, Analysts, and support staff.
  • Plan daily manpower deployment to optimize laboratory productivity.
  • Monitor employee performance and identify training needs.
  • Conduct on-the-job training and competency development programs for laboratory staff.
4. Instrument and Equipment Management
  • Ensure laboratory instruments are maintained, calibrated, and operating effectively.
  • Monitor calibration schedules and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate troubleshooting activities with service engineers and vendors.
  • Verify proper utilization and care of laboratory equipment.
5. Quality Management System
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 17025 requirements and laboratory quality procedures.
  • Review laboratory records, worksheets, logbooks, and quality documentation.
  • Support internal audits, external audits, proficiency testing, and accreditation activities.
  • Monitor implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
6. Sample and Report Management
  • Monitor sample receipt, testing status, and report issuance.
  • Ensure proper sample identification, handling, and traceability throughout the testing process.
  • Verify completion of reports and timely release to customers.
  • Coordinate with OCM Diagnosticians and Technical Executives for report review and approval.
7. Inventory and Resource Management
  • Monitor inventory levels of chemicals, standards, consumables, and laboratory supplies.
  • Ensure availability of resources required for uninterrupted testing operations.
  • Raise purchase requisitions and coordinate with procurement teams when required.
  • Minimize wastage and optimize resource utilization.
8. Customer and Business Support
  • Support customer visits, technical discussions, and laboratory audits.
  • Respond to technical queries from customers and stakeholders.
  • Assist Section Heads and Laboratory Managers in customer relationship management activities.
  • Support implementation of new projects and business opportunities.
9. Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
  • Ensure strict compliance with laboratory safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor the usage of PPE and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Conduct safety inspections and report hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the laboratory.
Required Qualifications
  • B.Sc. / M.Sc. Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Petrochemicals, or related discipline.
  • Additional certifications in Quality Management, Laboratory Management, ISO 17025, or Safety Management are preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years of laboratory experience in Petroleum, Petrochemical, Analytical Testing Laboratories.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
