Job summary

CivicDataLab invites applications for a Junior AI Developer to join its Responsible AI team. You will build AI systems and prototypes, work with multilingual NLP, and contribute to RAG pipelines and model evaluation for bias, safety, and privacy in the public sector.

You will collaborate with the AI Engineer across projects, translate research ideas into prototypes, and help ensure responsible AI practices while delivering impactful public-interest solutions.

Qualifications

• 1–2 years as AI/ML engineer, data scientist or software engineer.

CivicDataLab

CivicDataLab works at the intersection of data, technology, design, and social science to strengthen access to public information, evidence-based decision-making, and citizen participation in governance. It partners with governments, non-profits, think tanks, media houses, and universities to build data and technology capacity for better public decision-making, with expertise spanning digital public goods, climate change, public finance, urban development, and law and justice.

Role

A hands-on technical role on CivicDataLab's Responsible AI team, building AI systems and prototypes and supporting applied research. The Junior AI Developer will work closely with the AI Engineer, contributing to projects on multilingual AI, RAG pipelines, and AI evaluation for bias, safety, and privacy, with a strong focus on applying AI responsibly in the public sector.

Responsibilities

• Implement and experiment with prompting strategies, retrieval architectures, and LLM integrations across CDL's projects
• Develop and improve multilingual conversational AI interfaces for CivicDataLab's use cases
• Build and maintain RAG pipelines for document-heavy datasets
• Assess and improve dataset readiness for NLP tasks, including schema alignment and metadata tagging using standards like Croissant
• Build evaluation modules to measure model outputs for hallucination, bias, safety, and privacy issues across multilingual and domain-specific contexts

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with a focus on machine learning or NLP
• 1-2 years of experience as an AI/ML engineer, data scientist, or software engineer
• Working knowledge of LLMs, embeddings, RAG workflows, chatbots, and agentic architectures
• Proficiency in Python
• Comfortable working across multiple projects with some autonomy, and proactive about communicating progress and blockers
• Familiarity with Indic languages or multilingual/low-resource NLP is a plus
• Ability to turn loosely defined ideas into small, testable prototypes is a plus
• Interest in responsible AI, fairness, safety, transparency, or AI policy is a plus
• Comfort reading research papers and translating research ideas into working prototypes is a plus
• Exposure to open government data, civic tech, or public sector AI applications is a plus
