Job description

Position Summary

We track the learning progress of a carefully selected group of around 1,000 students across our 130 classrooms. This gives us a clear, consistent picture of how children are moving through different learning levels across the year and helps us direct our energy where it matters most. As our Student Data & Dashboard Intern, you will be the person who keeps this system running. You will travel to schools across Kolkata, support our teachers in carrying out student assessments on schedule, and maintain the dashboard our city team uses every month to make decisions. You will work closely with the City Director.

As a Kolkata city intern, you will be part of the team that helps us understand how well we are doing — and where we need to do better.

The role will run from May 2026 to June 2027 (13 months), with an expected commitment of approximately 3–4 days per month, including school visits. It is based in Kolkata and will require regular travel across the city, with reporting to the City Director, Teach For India Kolkata.

Responsibilities
  • School visits and data collection
    • Travel to schools across Kolkata to support our teachers in carrying out student learning assessments — at the start of the year, mid‑year, and at the end.
    • Keep accurate records for the group of students we track, noting any students who have left, finding suitable replacements, and making sure the records stay consistent throughout the year.
    • Follow up with our teachers each month to check that assessments are happening on schedule, and let the City Director know if something is falling behind.
  • Dashboard and data management
    • Update our student dashboard in Google Sheets every month with the latest assessment completion data.
    • Refresh the student progress tracker at each assessment window, ready for the team’s monthly review session.
    • Run basic quality checks each month — checking for missing data, errors, or inconsistencies.
    • Prepare a short, clear one‑page summary for the City Director before each monthly review.
  • Coordination
    • Work with our programme managers to make sure each teacher’s student list is accurate and up to date.
    • Be the first point of contact for teachers who have questions about their student records or assessment schedules.
    • Flag any concerns about data quality early — for example, if records appear incomplete or inconsistent.
What will you gain
  • Hands‑on mentorship from the City Director on how a large urban, low‑income education programme is managed.
  • A real understanding of how data drives decision‑making in a social sector organisation.
  • Strong skills in student assessment tracking, data quality management, and programme coordination that are directly applicable to careers in education, policy, and development.
Minimum Qualifications, Experiences and Expectations
  • Currently studying or recently completed a degree in any subject. We care far more about your attention to detail and reliability than your field of study.
  • Comfortable working with Google Sheets. You do not need to be a data expert, but you should be able to maintain clean records, use basic formulas, and catch mistakes.
  • Genuinely comfortable with regular travel across Kolkata. You will visit schools in different parts of the city and must be able to get around independently.
  • Someone who follows through — this role involves keeping track of many moving pieces across 130 teachers, and things fall apart quickly without consistent follow‑up.
  • Able to communicate clearly in English.
Preferred Qualifications, Experiences and Expectations
  • Prior experience in education, the social sector, or data‑related work.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace — Sheets, Forms, Drive.
  • A genuine interest in how data can be used to improve children’s learning.
