Job summary

American Express is seeking a senior DevOps/Platform Engineer to strengthen private and public cloud platforms, ensuring high availability and reducing toil. You will architect, implement monitoring, and support automation across Windows and Linux environments.

You will collaborate with operations, engineering, security and cloud teams, participate in incident response, and drive modernization projects while maintaining runbooks and documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years of industry experience with 3+ years of software development in Python and Go.
• Experience in Java8+ and Spring/Spring Boot frameworks is a plus, but not required.
• Understanding of Linux functionalities and shell scripting.
• Experience in cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP and Azure is beneficial.
• Good understanding of Container & Orchestration Technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
• Experience in automation tools such as Ansible.
• Experience in NoSQL databases such as Couchbase preferred.
• Ability to work with infrastructures including IaaS, PaaS, cloud technologies and CD tooling.
• Strong problem-solving, communication and ownership traits.

Responsibilities

• Identify feature sets for private/public cloud platforms to ensure availability and reduce toil.
• Hands-on architecture, design and development of monitoring systems for infrastructure and application availability.
• Assist with server provisioning, deployments, decommissioning and migrations.
• Perform system troubleshooting, log analysis and performance optimization.
• Support Windows and Linux server environments, including administration and maintenance.
• Monitor health, capacity, performance and SLAs; investigate incidents and service requests.
• Collaborate with application, database, network, storage, security and cloud teams.
• Participate in incident, problem and change management processes.
• Assist with backup, recovery, high availability and disaster recovery activities.
• Support automation and scripting using PowerShell, Shell, Python, or Ansible.

Job Responsibilities:

• Works closely with Operations and Engineering Teams to identify feature sets that impact private and public cloud platforms to ensure availability and reduce toil

• Performs hands‑on architecture, design and development of monitoring systems to provide continuous support for ongoing infrastructure and application availability

• Understands current incidents and provides solutions to detect, recover, and prevent re‑occurrence.

• Support day‑to‑day infrastructure operations across Windows and Linux server environments along with server administration, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Monitor infrastructure health, availability, capacity, and performance & investigate and resolve infrastructure incidents and service requests within defined SLAs.
• Assist with server provisioning, builds, deployments, decommissioning & support infrastructure migration, technology refresh, and modernization projects.
• Perform system‑level troubleshooting, log analysis, and performance optimization.
• Support user access management, permissions, and system configuration activities.
• Maintain infrastructure security, OS hardening, and compliance standards.
• Assist with storage, file systems, networking, DNS, and connectivity troubleshooting.
• Participate in incident, problem, and change management processes.
• Support root cause analysis (RCA) and implementation of preventive measures.
• Assist with backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery activities.
• Support automation and scripting using PowerShell, Shell, Python, or Ansible.
• Collaborate with application, database, network, storage, security, and cloud teams.
• Participate in project implementation, testing, cutover, and post‑deployment support.
• Maintain SOPs, technical documentation, operational runbooks, and audit evidence.
• Demonstrate strong problem‑solving, ownership, teamwork, and ability to balance BAU operations with project deliverables.
