Job description

Ushur delivers the world's first Customer Experience Automation platform built specifically for regulated industries. With guardrails and compliance-ready infrastructure, Ushur powers vertical AI Agents for healthcare, financial services and insurance.

Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Ushur is backed by Third Point Ventures, Tiger Global, 8VC, Iron Pillar, Aflac Ventures and Pentland Ventures, with a sizeable Fortune 500 customer base. Our Bengaluru office is one of two principal locations and is central to how the company is built and run.

We build AI agents for regulated enterprises, and we run our own operations the same way.

Title: HR Generalist
Experience: 2-3 years
Location: Bengaluru
Work Mode: Hybrid
Reports to: Director, People Operations

About the Role

The HR Generalist sits within Ushur's global Operations team - finance, accounting, legal, revenue operations, enablement and HR. The role supports the People function globally, with most day-to-day focus on India operations, spanning payroll and statutory administration, benefits, the employee lifecycle, compliance, recruitment and engagement.

You work directly with Operations colleagues in India and the US as a peer on one global team, with shared ownership of company-wide processes.

Alongside the operational core, the role carries the People function's automation work - identifying where AI can take on repetitive tasks across hiring, onboarding and reporting, and supporting new ways of working as they are adopted across the India team. Ushur is becoming an AI-native company, and this is where that shows up in People processes.

Operational accuracy comes first: payroll correct and filings on time. The Director, People Operations reviews work carrying statutory or financial risk, with independent ownership building through the first few cycles.

Three things distinguish this role. You work across the whole India People function rather than a slice of it, at a point when most people are still administering parts of it. You work on a question few practitioners at any level get near: how AI is used responsibly in decisions about people, in a business built for regulated industries. And you sit in a global Operations function, not a local support desk.

AI-Native Operations

Automation is core to the Operations team's mandate, and the standard is straightforward: where a process can be run by a workflow, it should be, and a person's time should go to the parts requiring judgment. Dedicated time is allocated to this, with access to Ushur's own platform. In practice, that means:

  • Finding repetitive tasks in People processes and automating them.
  • Using AI to help with screening, scheduling, checks and reporting - with a person always making the final call on anything that affects an individual.
  • Helping new joiners get comfortable with these tools from the start.
Responsibilities
Payroll and statutory compliance
  • Run the monthly India payroll cycle - inputs, validation, and post-payroll reconciliation - working with Finance and Director, People Operations.
  • Prepare termination pay inputs and full and final settlements, including notice, leave encashment and recovery calculations, for review before release.
  • Support periodic salary structure and labour code updates led by the Director, People Operations.
  • Support statutory compliance across PF, EPFO, NPS and professional tax, and act as the first point of contact for employee queries on tax regimes, declarations and payslips.
  • Maintain accurate employee records, leave data and reporting in the HRIS.
Benefits and vendor management
  • Administer the India benefits programme, including group medical insurance, OPD, meal cards and wellness initiatives.
  • Manage benefits vendors: onboarding and offboarding of employees, claims escalations, invoice processing with Finance, quarterly reviews and annual renewals.
  • Gather market and cost data to support annual renewals and vendor evaluations.
Employee lifecycle
  • Run onboarding end-to-end: pre-joining documentation, HRIS workflows, induction, systems and access coordination with IT, and 30-60-90 plans.
  • Run offboarding end-to-end: exit formalities, relieving and experience letters, asset and access recovery, benefits removal, final settlement coordination, and exit conversations.
  • Issue employment letters and respond to employment and background verification requests.
  • Administer the HRIS and improve the workflows within it.
Talent acquisition
  • Conduct first-level screening for candidates against structured rubrics and present evidence-based recommendations.
  • Coordinate interview loops across India and US time zones, and keep candidates informed throughout.
  • Administer and improve the applicant tracking system, and maintain hiring data and reporting.
Compliance, policy and documentation
  • Provide administrative support to the POSH Internal Committee, including the statutory training cadence, record-keeping and awareness communication.
  • Maintain the India People folder set as the single source of truth for the function.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation and responding to information requests.
Employee experience and engagement
  • Translate engagement survey findings into practical actions and track them through to closure.
  • Run recognition programmes, milestone celebrations and engagement initiatives for the India office.
  • Support all-hands and internal communication for the India team.
  • Partner with workplace and administration colleagues on office operations, and administer operational programmes such as the on-call roster.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
  • 2-3 years' experience in Human Resources, with broad exposure across its core functions.
  • Experience supporting an employee population of comparable size, approximately 100 to 200, preferably within a startup or scale-up environment.
  • Demonstrated experience running payroll inputs, onboarding, compliance administration and employee query resolution with limited supervision.
  • Exposure to recruitment, including interview coordination, candidate communication and applicant tracking system use.
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for using AI tools to improve efficiency.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to organise and interpret significant volumes of information accurately.
  • Working knowledge of Indian employment law and payroll practices.
Attributes
  • Receptive to feedback and able to act on it promptly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across employees, candidates, leadership and external partners.
  • Ownership-minded, with a track record of taking tasks through to closure and escalating issues early.
  • Adaptable and able to re-prioritise at pace without compromising accuracy.
  • Comfortable working with limited supervision, having run core HR processes directly rather than only in a support capacity.
  • Interested in AI and automation, with practical use of AI tools to simplify repetitive work.
Selection Criteria
  • Established use of AI tools in your daily work, with examples of what you have built. Informal work is fine; demonstrated application is required.
  • A track record of identifying repetitive work and addressing it.
  • The ability to explain the purpose of a process before proposing changes to it.
  • A considered view on where AI should not be applied, and the reasoning behind it.
Why Join Us?
  • Company culture. A values-driven environment built on respect, inclusion, and collaboration.
  • Paid time off. Twenty days of flexible paid time off annually.
  • Health benefits. Preventive check-ups, medical insurance for employees and dependents, wellness sessions, and health talks.
  • Compensation and equity. Competitive compensation and stock options - a direct stake in Ushur's success.
  • Professional development. Reimbursed certifications, plus the Ushur Community's learning resources.
