Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking an Environmental Studies Technician to assist the Senior Environmental Services Technician in reviewing proposed highway improvements for environmental impacts and mitigation. You will help develop environmental reports, keep mitigation records, and ensure timely, accurate documentation.

The role requires completing two years of college in civil engineering technology or equivalent experience, plus literacy in GIS/CADD and Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college in civil engineering technology with 30 months of engineering experience or six years of engineering experience.

Responsibilities

Position Overview

This position is accountable for assisting the Senior Environmental Services Technician in the review of proposed highway improvements to determine potential environmental impacts, develop appropriate mitigation when necessary, and keep records of the status of all mitigation actions to ensure the timely, accurate, and complete development of environmental reports and documents.

Essential Functions
  • Submits environmental survey requests to the Bureau of Design and Environment.
  • Assesses hazardous waste surveys and submits work orders.
  • Processes borrow waste area requests.
  • Assists and coordinates with the Senior Environmental Studies Technician with reports related to environmental studies.
  • Performs duties in accordance with departmental safety policies. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum, PLUS thirty months of engineering experience; OR six years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in the performance of a variety of technical activities relating to civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of regulatory policies that pertain to the environmental sciences.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Geographic Information System (GIS), and web-based databases to complete assignments.
  • Strong oral and/or written communication skills.
