We're looking for an Engineering Manager who has walked the path from individual contributor to people leader and understands both the craft of building software and the craft of building teams. You'll own the growth, performance, and output of your engineering team while staying close enough to the technical work to guide sound decisions and unblock complex problems.
The core responsibilities for the job include the following:
People Management
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, with direct ownership of performance and career development.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and support career progression conversations.
- Handle performance management, including improvement plans where needed.
- Drive hiring: define role requirements, participate in interviews, and help build a strong team.
Technical Leadership
- Stay technically sound enough to understand architecture decisions, debug complex issues, and guide the team through technical trade-offs.
- Partner with engineers on system design and code quality standards, without necessarily being the primary hands-on coder.
- Help the team break down ambiguous problems into actionable technical plans.
- Guide the team in balancing technical debt against feature velocity.
Execution and Delivery
- Own sprint planning, prioritization, and delivery timelines for your team.
- Remove blockerstechnical, organizational, or interpersonalthat slow the team down.
- Track and report on team velocity, quality metrics, and delivery predictability.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with product managers to align technical feasibility with the product roadmap.
- Collaborate with design, QA, and other engineering teams to ensure smooth cross-team dependencies.
- Communicate technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Represent the team in planning, org-level syncs, and technical reviews.
Requirements
- 7-10 years of total experience in software engineering.
- Prior experience as an individual contributor (hands-on coding) before transitioning into management.
- At least 1 year of experience managing direct reports, including running at least one full performance review cycle.
- Strong technical foundation, comfortable in system design discussions and debugging conversations, even if not writing production code daily.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and grow engineering talent.
- Excellent communication skills, with experience collaborating across product, design, and other functions.
- Ability to balance people management with technical judgment: this is fundamentally a people-first role, but technical credibility matters.
