Job summary

General Motors in Bengaluru seeks an experienced Project Manager for automation programs across electrical and mechanical disciplines. You will supervise scope, schedule, risks, and supplier interfaces, ensuring design integrity and on-site commissioning for complex turnkey projects.

The role requires deep knowledge of Rockwell PLC, Siemens HMI, Emulate 3D, and robot systems (FANUC). You will train suppliers and integrate GM standards across projects.

Qualifications

  • Masters or bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronics/instrumentation engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years experience in automotive or software companies with an automation background.
  • In-depth knowledge of control systems and/or control systems in automotive assembly plants.
  • Knowledge of PLC, HMI, drives, networks with strong programming skills preferably Rockwell PLC.
  • Experience with Emulate 3D, Siemens HMI, and machine-vision hardware/software.
  • Knowledge of robot programming and FANUC robots.
  • Ability to read electrical/mechanical drawings and design capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and control projects including scope, issues, risks and schedule.
  • Handle issues to closure and ensure progress visibility through meetings and reports.
  • Coordinate design and testing activities across internal teams and suppliers.
  • Perform design reviews for hardware/software and integration at site.
  • Implement global standards and train suppliers and engineers as needed.
  • Conduct offline tests and supplier site buy-offs.
  • Develop and maintain Emulate 3D models for electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate with GM units worldwide for global projects.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and control projects including project scope, issues, risks and schedule
  • Handle issues to closure
  • Communicate project status and ensure all internal customers are aware of progress through project meetings, status reports and reviews
  • Participate in investment studies, preliminary design discussions for any new or expansion projects
  • Responsible for in‑house engineering on hardware designs, software designs, emulation, integration and commissioning at site
  • If the project is turnkey, guide and approve hardware/software designs done by contractors for various projects in the region
  • Conduct offline testing and buy‑off at supplier’s site
  • Implement GM global tools for design of hardware and software to ensure minimum debug on site
  • Train suppliers and engineers of other GM units
  • Validate designs and provide feedback to the global centre with respect to GM standards
  • Responsible for deploying GM global standards across all projects
  • Responsible for training and integrating suppliers to enforce GM standards
  • Responsible for performing root‑cause analysis
  • Prepare and share lessons learned for completed projects
  • Coordinate project timing schedule, design deliverables and safety aspects with the team
  • Jointly conduct test runs for equipment at site as per process
  • Coordinate with other units of GM worldwide for global projects
  • Develop and maintain components in Emulate 3D (electrical and mechanical)
  • Develop electrical and mechanical models using Emulate 3D
  • Thorough knowledge of plant‑floor system related to automation
Requirements
  • Masters or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or instrumentation engineering
  • 10+ years experience in automotive or software companies with an automation background
  • In‑depth knowledge of control systems and/or control systems in automotive assembly plants
  • Knowledge of PLC, HMI, drives, networks along with strong programming skills preferably Rockwell PLC
  • Project management and site execution skills
  • Thorough knowledge of Rockwell PLC software, Siemens HMI software and interfaces to other control systems
  • Knowledge of emulation software such as Emulate 3D, etc.
  • Knowledge of machine‑vision hardware/software (Matrox)
  • Thorough knowledge of PLC hardware and software design and engineering
  • Knowledge of design for health and safety will be helpful
  • Knowledge of equipment selection, cost estimation, material procurement is an advantage
  • Ability to read electrical/mechanical drawings, layouts and have design capabilities
  • Acquaintance with Eplan for hardware design and experience with Siemens HMI will be an added advantage
  • Ability to understand legacy equipment and propose solutions in case of upgrade
  • Knowledge of interface to upper level systems
  • Basic knowledge of programming skills such as XML, C#, JScript, VBA, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge of robot programming and troubleshooting, preferably FANUC robots
  • Knowledge of robotic applications such as spot‑welding, arc‑welding, dispensing, roller hemming, etc.
  • Acquaintance with robot simulation studies and experience on robot simulation software will be an added advantage
  • Robot interface with other equipment (PLC, line controller, other machines, etc.)
  • Experience in large BIW projects
  • Ability to understand electrical and electronic requirements for mechanical equipment
